Mortal Kombat 1's revolutionary Kameo Fighter system aims to revolutionize the tried-and-true formula by incorporating button-press assists from different versions of characters throughout the series' history. This feature has already demonstrated its potential to enhance Mortal Kombat 1's combo and finishing move systems, and could potentially pave the way for a multiplayer mode similar to MultiVersus' 2v2.
From being briefly mentioned in a bullet point during a Warner Bros earnings call at the beginning of the year, to the elaborate showcase that fans are now treated to, NetherRealm has done an exceptional job building anticipation for the September 2023 release of Mortal Kombat 1. The change in tone, combined with the introduction of the new Kameo Fighters system, makes this installment the most ambitious since Mortal Kombat 9. Given the positive reception during the closed beta, it appears that NetherRealm is living up to its reputation as one of the leading fighting game studios.
Mortal Kombat 1 Can Adapt Over the Course of its Lifespan
Despite its short-lived popularity, the initial surge of interest in MultiVersus upon its early-access release demonstrated that there was a strong demand among fighting game enthusiasts. Although the game offers a 1v1 mode, its main attraction and most favored aspect is the 2v2 mode, which fills a gap in the market for a fighting game where players can team up and battle together. With plans to relaunch in 2024, it remains uncertain whether MultiVersus will be able to regain its share of the playerbase.
Although it is not without flaws, primarily in terms of gameplay speed, the response to the Mortal Kombat 1 stress test has been overwhelmingly positive. The Kameo Fighters have seamlessly integrated into the game, adding a significant amount of variation and strategic elements to each match. Early concerns that the addition of these fighters would make the battlefield feel overcrowded or chaotic now appear to be unsubstantiated. It will be fascinating to witness how NetherRealm expands upon Mortal Kombat throughout its lifespan, particularly with the introduction of new Kombatants and Kameo Fighters through DLC.
Would 2v2 Be Feasible For Mortal Kombat?
A 2v2 mode for Mortal Kombat 1 or the next entry in the series has the potential to be successful, although it would require significant effort to fine-tune. The presence of the Kameo Fighters in MK1 provides a glimpse into what having four Kombatants on-screen simultaneously would look like, without obstructing the fighting space excessively. If these additional characters were controlled by humans and permanent, the solution could simply be zooming out the camera or using a dynamic camera similar to the one in MultiVersus.
However, the size of the arenas in Mortal Kombat 1 is a major concern. They are currently designed for 1v1 matches, and adding more Kombatants would disrupt the balance and make it too easy to trap a player in a corner. In terms of balancing, each Kombatant would need to be adjusted specifically for 2v2 mode to prevent potentially overpowered combinations. Despite these challenges, all of these issues can be resolved with proper attention and it ultimately depends on whether NetherRealm recognizes the value in implementing such a mode.
The success of MultiVersus has demonstrated that fighting game players can enjoy a satisfying and competitive experience together. The co-op Towers of Time mode in Mortal Kombat 11 may have been a test for the developer to determine interest in a full 2v2 mode, which is now being explored with the introduction of the Kameo Fighters. However, it remains to be seen where NetherRealm's focus will ultimately lie in this regard.
Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled for release on September 19, 2023, and will be available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
