Revamped Mortal Kombat 1 Axes Krypt System

Mortal Kombat 1 fans, get ready for a new way to unlock rewards! Co-creator announces the game will be revamping its unlocking system, saying goodbye to the Krypt Exciting changes ahead for this classic fighting game

Ed Boon, co-creator of the iconic Mortal Kombat franchise, has revealed that the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 will not feature a traditional Krypt. This news has sparked interest among fans of the series, who are eagerly seeking out every detail about the highly anticipated reboot. For the past six games, the Krypt has been a source of controversy among the fanbase, allowing players to unlock concept art, finishers, arenas, and even new characters through the use of Koins. As an integral part of the series since its debut in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, the Krypt has undergone several changes over the years, culminating in a third-person play style with a narrative involving Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11.

Ed Boon confirmed that Mortal Kombat 11 will not feature the Krypt, but instead will introduce a new system for unlocking content. It is unclear why the Krypt was removed, but it could be due to the franchise's reboot. No details have been released regarding the new feature that will replace the Krypt, but more information is expected in the coming months.

During the interview, Boon discussed various aspects of Mortal Kombat, including the identity of the game's main villain, the advantages of using an SSD to create high-quality backgrounds, and the mechanics of Kameo Fighters. He also touched on the topic of fatalities that were deemed too extreme and divulged that his backlog of games is quite extensive, with God of War Ragnarok and Street Fighter 6 being on his list of titles to play. Boon is renowned for taking fan feedback into consideration, and it appears that the RNG system used in the Krypt has garnered enough negative feedback to prompt a change. While some fans appreciate the system's creativity, many have expressed disappointment with the rewards they receive or lack thereof, and the upcoming system update is expected to bring a much-needed change to the game.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
