The consistent presence of the Adamantoise in the Final Fantasy franchise has been a topic of debate. While its design and size have varied, it has remained a staple enemy throughout the series. However, Final Fantasy 12, Final Fantasy 13, and some others have pushed the boundaries with the Adamantoise, resulting in the impressive version seen in Final Fantasy 15. Regrettably, Final Fantasy 16 seems to regress in terms of its growth and impact.
In Final Fantasy 15, the Adamantoise was a formidable boss fight that required significant time and preparation to defeat. With over 5 million HP and towering over other creatures, defeating it was a challenging but rewarding accomplishment. Its monumental size and ambitious design set a high standard for future iterations of the creature. Unfortunately, it appears that Final Fantasy 16 does not live up to this level of excellence.
FF15's Adamantoise Was Something Special, But Final Fantasy 16's Is Not
In contrast, Final Fantasy 16 reverts the Adamantoise to its former status as a common enemy. Although it can be slightly frustrating to battle against and its shell can deflect errant attacks, the challenges and accomplishments of defeating it pale in comparison to FF15's Adamantoise. There was a distinct sense of achievement in conquering such a colossal creature, even when pitted against other massive entities like Leviathan and Titan. Square Enix may have deliberately wanted to avoid replicating the scale of FF16's Eikons, considering the unique nature of each boss fight. Nevertheless, this would have been a fantastic exception to the rule.
Given the scale of FF15's Adamantoise, it may not be suitable for most games. However, considering the vastness of certain locations in Valisthea, the presence of a colossal resting turtle would be less peculiar compared to some aspects of FF16. Ideally, Final Fantasy 16 should have incorporated something special for it in the form of hunts. Unfortunately, this was not the case, resulting in a disappointment.
But that doesn't mean Final Fantasy 16's Adamantoise is entirely devoid of significance. Although Square Enix has no current plans for DLC, the reception and feedback received could potentially change their stance and lead to the inclusion of a massive boss battle similar to FF15. There may also be spin-off games that reintroduce its imposing size. Additionally, it is inevitable that Final Fantasy 17 will be released in the future. Considering this, almost anything would serve as a substantial improvement over Final Fantasy 16's Adamantoise.
Final Fantasy 16 is available now on PS5.
