Baldur’s Gate 3’s Grymforge Boss Fight is One to Remember
The Grym boss encounter in Baldur’s Gate 3 poses a unique challenge due to its resilient physique, requiring players to execute specific actions to expose its vulnerability. Engaging in a confrontation with this formidable foe becomes inevitable while attempting to utilize the Grymforge. However, players can still adopt various approaches to this battle, uncovering numerous opportunities. Despite boasting an unexpectedly substantial amount of health, players can make ample preparations for this encounter prior to reaching Act Two in Baldur’s Gate 3.
To make Grym susceptible to damage, players must continuously flood the Grymforge with lava during the boss fight. Otherwise, Grym will become hardened and nearly invincible against all damage. Additionally, casting the level two Heat Metal Spell can also activate Grym's vulnerable state. What sets Grym apart as an enemy is that it exclusively targets the character who last landed a successful attack on it, regardless of the damage inflicted. Consequently, the boss fight becomes a thrilling chase combined with the classic "the floor is lava" game.
What enhances the memorability of this boss fight is the opportunity for players to utilize a special environmental attack against Grym. Specifically, if players can lure Grym onto the anvil located in the center of the Grymforge, they can activate the forge-hammer to strike down on the boss, causing tremendous damage and temporarily flattening it like a pancake. Successfully executing this maneuver multiple times can greatly simplify an otherwise challenging encounter. However, players who manage to defeat Grym without utilizing the forge hammer attack will earn themselves an achievement.
One effective method the community has discovered for dealing with Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3 is utilizing the notorious Owlbear attack. Alternatively, exploiting Grym’s weakened state and vulnerability to Bludgeoning damage by wielding weapons like the legendary mace, Blood of Lathander, is a solid strategy.
As an added bonus, players can take advantage of the Grymforge after defeating Grym to craft a few pieces of Adamantine gear. This boss fight and related quest offer players the opportunity to obtain a highly rare helmet, a selection of Adamantine armor and weapons, bragging rights, and approximately 500 XP for their triumph over Grym.
Baldur's Gate 3 is out now for PC and PS5 with an Xbox Series X/S version in development.
