After an intriguing announcement trailer that solidified Mortal Kombat 1 as a reboot, NetherRealm swiftly built on the hype by unveiling the title's first gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest. Now, in a matter of weeks, Mortal Kombat's renowned Kombat Kast has made its return, providing insights as NetherRealm developers delve into the game's fundamental mechanics and reveal more about its roster of fighters.

The initial Kombat Kast session shed light on several new features introduced in Mortal Kombat 1. Lengthy discussions centered around the innovative Kameo system, accompanied by detailed breakdowns of the revamped movesets for both Scorpion and Johnny Cage. These showcases included a mix of classic and fresh combos for these fighters. However, the standout moment of Mortal Kombat 1's inaugural Kombat Kast was the unveiling of the game's latest trailer, confirming additional fully playable fighters and introducing an array of captivating Kameo characters.

Titled "The Lin Kuei Trailer," this latest teaser for Mortal Kombat 1 focuses on the ninja clan. Switching between story cutscenes and actual gameplay, the trailer confirms the addition of five new characters to the game. Two of them are fully playable, while the other three serve as Kameo fighters. After a brief story cutscene showcasing the new relationship between Scorpion and Sub-Zero as brothers, the trailer dives into a lengthy gameplay section featuring Sub-Zero, with Scorpion assuming the role of a Kameo fighter. This provides fans with a better understanding of the Kameo system, as Scorpion's Kameo moveset is not only used for offensive attacks but also serves as a means of escape for Sub-Zero. One move, for example, shows Sub-Zero evading an attack by being pulled backwards with Scorpion's spear.

The first new fighter is introduced, making his return from Mortal Kombat 2 in Mortal Kombat 1. In a brief cutscene, Scorpion mentions that although they are not related, he sees Smoke as his brother. The gameplay footage showcases some fresh moves for Smoke, departing from his previous projectile and swift hand chop-focused style. In Mortal Kombat 1, Smoke wields a levitating dagger, preserving his teleportation abilities and smoke bomb attacks to satisfy fans.

Following more gameplay featuring Sub-Zero, the trailer transitions to the next confirmed playable character for Mortal Kombat 1: Rain. A staple in the franchise, Rain first appeared in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but his combat style is notably different this time. Instead of relying on his fists or a glaive, Mortal Kombat 1's Rain skillfully utilizes a staff with a water-filled ball at its peak. Rain expertly controls this water ball, deploying it in various moves such as creating vortex portals, unleashing impactful waves of water, and summoning enormous raindrops to crush his adversaries.

Three additional Kameo fighters have been confirmed for inclusion in Mortal Kombat 1 in the trailer. These fighters include Cyrax, the yellow Lin Kuei assassin-turned-cyborg, Sektor, the red Lin Kuei cyborg, and Frost, in her original human form. Each of these fighters showcases an impressive moveset, featuring iconic attacks such as Cyrax's buzzsaw, Sektor's missiles, and Frost's ice daggers.

The highly anticipated release of Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled for September 19, 2023, and it will be available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
