Bridgers and Mescal have been linked together since 2020, with rumors even suggesting they were engaged. However, following their breakup, the couple chose to keep their personal lives private. In a rare comment, the actor expressed his frustration with the speculation surrounding their split.
"I often feel the urge to clarify the status of my relationship - it's something that will always be there," Mescal told Vanity Fair in February 2023, reflecting on how he felt "really mad and upset" about the rumors. "The temptation still remains to tell everyone to mind their own business. This is my life, and it's up to me to decide what is or isn't happening."
In May 2023, three months later, Bridgers expressed her thoughts on fans discussing her romantic life. Speaking to WSJ. Magazine, the singer revealed, "I feel like I've been giving more than I've been receiving, and I give a lot. I believe in being incredibly honest because I appreciate that in the artists whose music I admired as a child. Witnessing genuine emotions and authenticity was truly inspiring for me. It's disheartening to face backlash for being open and honest."
Burnham, for his part, previously dated filmmaker Lorene Scafaria.

Soon after revealing her father's passing, Bridgers was witnessed strolling alongside Burnham at LAX airport. Subsequently, as she embarked on her journey to attend her dad's funeral, she staunchly criticized those fans who engaged in "bullying" behavior towards her.
“I’m coming from a place of actual physical sensation — I can feel it within myself as I utter these words — but individuals with my image as their profile picture on Twitter, who profess to enjoy my music, mercilessly harassed me while I was at the airport on my journey to attend my father’s funeral earlier this year,” she disclosed during an interview with Them magazine a couple of months subsequently.

During Taylor Swift's Eras Tour event in Philadelphia, Keith Urban captured a video of himself in the VIP section. In the background, there were Bridgers and Burnham cuddling. Urban offered an apology a month after the incident, expressing his regret to Entertainment Tonight. He mentioned feeling extremely awkward and apologetic towards Phoebe, acknowledging that he was solely focused on enjoying the concert and could not predict such unexpected occurrences.
