When a fan asked about their relationship, he shared, "I contribute in some ways, but she takes on the major responsibilities figuratively. As for the literal heavy lifting, that falls on me."

Brody shared in March 2021 that he first encountered Meester while she was working on Gossip Girl.
During an episode of Anna Faris' "Unqualified" podcast, Brody reminisced about their initial meeting, mentioning that they were introduced by Josh Schwartz, who produced both shows. The entire Gossip Girl cast was dining at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles, a place where Brody spent much of his time during his twenties. As he was leaving, Schwartz introduced them.
Over the following years, Brody casually crossed paths with Meester before they reunited on the set of the 2011 movie The Oranges. During that time, Brody was involved with someone else, and their interactions were limited to occasional encounters through mutual work friends. However, it wasn't until around a year after the movie, when Brody was single, that they got together.
He remarked, "However, I had no clue about her true nature. Frankly, for the initial few years when I hadn't acquainted myself with her, I presumed she probably wasn't a good person, possibly due to the influence of television series like Gossip Girl. Not to imply that I generalized this perception to all actresses - I didn't. On the contrary, I appreciate dating actors, as I always reject such stereotypes."
