In the world of Mortal Kombat, fights can erupt unexpectedly between anyone, including close friends and family. These fights, even when seemingly absurd, are an integral part of the game's storyline. NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat series has often featured logical match-ups like Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero or Liu Kang vs. Shao Kahn. However, there are also notorious instances where fights arise from bizarre circumstances, such as one character's disbelief in the other's honesty, leading to a vicious brawl. Based on the trailers released so far, it appears that Mortal Kombat 1 will continue this trend.
The trailers for Mortal Kombat 1 have showcased numerous intense battles, featuring beloved characters from the series. From the glimpses of the story provided in these trailers, it seems that most of these fights will align with the overall narrative of the game. For example, Scorpion and Sub-Zero face off against Rain, which makes perfect sense in the context of the storyline. However, there is one match-up that appears to be a typical case of misunderstanding in Mortal Kombat, and that is the confrontation between Kenshi Takahashi and Johnny Cage. Kenshi is on a quest to retrieve his family sword, Sento, which leads to this conflict.
Why Johnny Cage Might Have Sento In Mortal Kombat 1
Kenshi's Sento sword has a fascinating origin story in the Mortal Kombat universe. Initially shared in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Kenshi stumbles upon Sento in a hidden ancient cave. Guided by Shang Tsung, who is disguised as an elderly individual, Kenshi falls into the trap of opening a mysterious gateway within the cavern, believing that the sword is situated there.
Instead, an overwhelming surge of hundreds of souls pour out of the gate, overpowering Kenshi and leaving him blinded. After absorbing the souls, Shang Tsung abandons Kenshi, leaving him for dead. However, Kenshi soon perceives faint whispers emanating from the depths of the cave. As he investigates further, Kenshi locates Sento and uncovers the astonishing truth that the sword has been communicating with him telepathically, containing the imprisoned souls of his ancestors.
From that moment forward, Sento became inseparable from Kenshi, and their connection grew stronger with each passing day. Through telepathy, Kenshi is able to communicate with the sword, using his natural telekinetic abilities to wield it in battles. While Sento makes a triumphant comeback in Mortal Kombat 1, its origins and subsequent history have been significantly altered this time around.
In the rebooted universe created by Fire God Liu Kang, Mortal Kombat 1 introduces a series of significant changes to the world's state and the characters' origins. Kenshi, too, undergoes a transformation from simply being the world's finest swordsman in pursuit of more power to having a deeply tragic backstory.
500 years ago, the Takahashi clan, once a formidable tribe of warriors, experienced a devastating defeat that resulted in their loss of power. Along with their defeat, the family sword, Sento, went missing. To survive, the remaining clan members were compelled to join the Bakuto, which later evolved into the modern-day Yakuza. Growing up witnessing the suffering this caused his family, Kenshi now embarks on a quest to locate Sento, aiming to liberate his family from their Yakuza entanglements and restore their honorable legacy.
Based on the glimpses provided to fans thus far, it appears that Mortal Kombat 1 will depict the moment when Kenshi finally discovers the whereabouts of Sento: within the mansion of actor Johnny Cage. Although the trailer depicts a showdown between the two for possession of the sword, it is improbable that Johnny Cage's ownership of Sento stems from any ill intentions. Rather, it is likely that Johnny Cage possesses the sword simply because he is a millionaire with excess resources and an ancient sword adorning his fireplace undoubtedly adds to its appeal. After a brief skirmish, it is highly probable that Cage will willingly return Sento to Kenshi.
Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
