Unlocking the Secrets of Baldur's Gate 3: Journey to the Temple of Bhaal for a Rescue Mission

Embark on a daring quest armed with the Amulet of Bhaal to locate the hidden temple of the god of murder in the depths of the Undercity. Will you save Orin's victim in time?

In Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3, players are tasked with locating and entering the Temple of Bhaal. Even with Orin the Red's assistance, they must still figure out a way to access her sanctum and deliver Gortash's head.

Before tackling this challenge, players must uncover the secrets behind the ongoing murders in Baldur's Gate. While the quest can kick off at Rivington and the Open Hand Temple, alternative starting points are scattered throughout the game for players to explore.

Orin the Red: The Proficient Torturer and Murderer Updated on February 28, 2024, by Nahda Nabiilah: Orin the Red is one of the three chosen by the Absolute who is proficient in the art of torture and murder. Players will run into her multiple times thanks to her shapeshifting ability, which leads them eventually into the Temple of Bhaal after solving a murder case. However, keep in mind that gaining access to the Temple is no easy feat, since a special Amulet is necessary to unlock the entrance. Additionally, you will face many horrors inside that temple to rescue Orin’s victim, including the Slayer.

To enter the Temple of Bhaal in Baldur's Gate 3, players must first obtain the Amulet of Bhaal. This can be acquired by meeting with the Murder Tribunal. For a quick summary of how to proceed, players can refer to the "Investigate the Murders" quest guide.

Get the Bloodstained Parchment from one of the murder sites in the South Span of Wyrm's Rock or in the Lower City.

Visit Cora Highberry and warn her.

Visit Figaro Pennygood and confront the murderer.

Take the murderer's "handbag" to Candulhallow's Tombstones and press the button hidden behind a painting.

Use the murderer's hands to enter the presence of the Murder Tribunal.

Either kill the Tribunal or become an Unholy Assassin to get the Amulet of Bhaal.

To find the entrance to the Temple of Bhaal, players should first note that Baldur's Gate 3 will warn them that Orin will be upset if they killed the Tribunal. However, despite this warning, the party can still perform several long rests before she kills her hostage.

Several entrances lead players to the sewers below the Lower City, primarily located on the west side of the region. Accessible through round sewer entrances, the Guild hideout also features two locked doors that provide entry to the rest of the sewer system.

The Temple of Bhaal can be accessed through a door located north of the sewer region, near the "Undercity" waypoint. A distinctive feature of this location is the paving stone bearing the circular blood drops symbol of Bhaal.

Upon reaching the large stone door, players will find it locked and unpickable. However, presenting the Amulet of Bhaal triggers a response from the door, which then requests further proof of faith. Players can truthfully declare that killing the Tribunal, as followers of the God of Murder, is an act of devotion.

How to Survive Manslaughter Chasm

On the opposite side of the door lies a corpse and a note bearing a cautionary message. Beyond the note, a band of Bhaal devotees await to ambush the party, led by the infamous Farslayer of Bhaal, Ghislev. Ghislev will intone Bhaal's deadly Power Word Kill on his turn, with the potential to eliminate all party members in the Manslaughter Chasm area if he completes his five-round chant.

Positioned across the chasm from the party, Ghislev is surrounded by various groups of Bhaalites. The initial threat comes from a trio of Reapers of Bhaal perched on a cliff, but more adversaries materialize as party members traverse down the cliff and across the pillar connecting the chasm's edges.

Ghislev possesses a defense known as Unstoppable 5, a unique trait exclusive to Bhaalites. This defense reduces all incoming attacks against the character to 1 damage, regardless of their original strength. The effect of Unstoppable 5 lasts for the next five hits and prevents the character from being thrown, shoved, or restrained as long as it is active.

The key to winning this battle lies in defeating Ghislev. By eliminating Ghislev, the triggering of Power Word Kill is prevented, and all other opponents will disappear once Ghislev is defeated. A strategic approach to defeating Ghislev involves positioning a Wizard or Sorcerer near him using spells like Misty Step or Dimension Door to cross obstacles. The spellcaster can then utilize Magic Missile at the third level against Ghislev, as each missile counts as an individual hit for Unstoppable to take effect.

Players can explore the area once the enemies vanish, then move on once they're ready.

Ghislev's Vulnerabilities

Ghislev will usually teleport to the area exit if a party member crosses the chasm, but this still puts him relatively close to the bottomless pit. In addition, he only has 68 hit points, so he goes down quickly once his Unstoppable charges run out.

Baldurs Gate 3 Temple of Bhaal Path - The Temple Approach

Baldurs Gate 3 Temple of Bhaal Path - The Temple Approach

Beyond Manslaughter Chasm, there is a road that guides you to the entrance of the Temple of Bhaal. As you journey along this path, you will encounter statues that speak a prophecy familiar to players of the first two Baldur's Gate games. Additionally, there are various containers along the way that hold valuable items waiting to be looted. Towards the end of the route, players will stumble upon the crime scene where they can discover the decapitated head of Dribbles the Clown, placed on the body of Wilting Alex.

Heading: How To Defeat The Slayer

Paragraph: In this area, players will not encounter any enemies or puzzles. However, they will come across a final waypoint where they have the opportunity to return to camp for a last chance to long rest. Additionally, there is a side path that leads to the Absolute's location, but the Emperor will caution the party to avoid it until they have obtained all three Netherstones. When the players are prepared, they should proceed to the door and present it with the Amulet of Bhaal.

Baldurs Gate 3 Temple of Bhaal Slayer - How To Slay The Slayer

The residents of the temple are welcoming towards the party, allowing them to make their way to the main altar where Orin awaits. Alternatively, players can opt to explore a hidden path leading to Orin's private chamber, although this choice will not alter the ultimate showdown. Some players may choose to initiate the battle from the lower staircase instead of the upper one.

If Gortash is still alive when the party approaches Orin, a party member must pass a Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion check against 25 to convince her to let her hostage live. However, even if Gortash is dead and the protagonist is an Unholy Assassin, Orin will turn into the Slayer and attack. Bhaal is the God of Murder, after all.

As the Slayer (another reference to the earlier games), Orin has Unstoppable 7, and the chanting Bhaal worshipers around the altar will renew her charges at the end of every round. The chanters have Sanctuary on, which prevents direct attacks, but players can still harm them with area-of-effect spells. Another way to blast through Orin's protections is to cast Magic Missile at level five, then have every other party member hammer her with everything they have.

After Orin falls, the chanters around the temple will cease chanting and launch an attack. Dealing with them is much simpler compared to facing off against the Slayer. Players can choose to engage the remaining members of the temple, as they will remain passive. After the battle, it is advisable to search Orin's body for her weapons, Bloodthirst and Crimson Mischief, along with her studded leather armor +2. Additionally, players may explore Orin's quarters where they will discover a deceased dragonborn (assuming the protagonist is not The Dark Urge) and a shrine dedicated to Orin's late mother.
