Grimoires, made of mana, are significant books in the world of Black Clover. They grant their user the ability to cast enhanced magical spells that would otherwise be impossible without them. Magic Knights and mages utilize these books to maintain balance between good and evil. While there are those who use Grimoires for malicious purposes, the magic knights ensure that innocent individuals are protected. Interestingly, Grimoires choose their users, and as the user progresses as a magic knight or mage, the Grimoire grows alongside them and keeps track of their spells.
What Are They?
Each Grimoire is a personalized representation of its owner's magical attribute, with a unique binding and cover design. The front cover also displays the insignia of the kingdom they belong to, such as Clover, Heart, Spade, or Diamond. Mages carry their Grimoires in various ways, ranging from satchels on their belts to custom-built ones strapped to their legs or chests. As a mage's power grows, they can unlock more spells in their Grimoire, allowing them to cast more potent magic. This unlocking often occurs during challenging situations, which helps the mage become stronger. The bond between a mage and their Grimoire is one-of-a-kind, and when a new spell is unlocked, it is magically recorded in the Grimoire. As a result, the Grimoire can immediately flip to the page containing the spell the mage wishes to use. When in use, the Grimoire typically floats in front of the mage, radiating a soft glow.
Only the rightful owner of a Grimoire can use it to cast spells, meaning that if it is stolen or sold, it becomes unusable. To obtain a Grimoire, a mage must be at least 15 years old and attend the Grimoire acceptance ceremony at the Grimoire tower in their region. During this ceremony, a Grimoire will choose the mage, as demonstrated in the Black Clover series when Asta visits the Grimoire tower in hopes of receiving one. Tower masters oversee and maintain Grimoire towers located throughout the kingdoms, and even if a mage misses the annual acceptance ceremony, they can still visit a Grimoire tower to obtain a Grimoire.
Types of Grimoires
Mages in the clover Kingdom typically receive Grimoires with a 3 leafed clover symbol, but in rare instances, some mages may receive Grimoires with 4 or even 5 leaf clovers. Those who receive a 4 leaf clover Grimoire are considered special and highly unique. In the popular Black Clover series, Yuno receives a 4 leaf clover Grimoire, which is said to represent luck, and as a result, he becomes one of the most powerful and skilled members of the Magic Knights.
According to legend, Grimoires adorned with 5 leaf clovers are believed to harbor a devil. Such Grimoires are said to emerge when their original owners, who possessed 4 leaf clover Grimoires, experience profound sorrow and hopelessness, causing a fifth leaf to sprout on the Grimoire and turning it into a sinister shade of black. Once this transformation occurs, the Grimoire becomes susceptible to being controlled by a devil. Asta is among the rare few who have been bestowed with a 5 leaf clover Grimoire. Unlike regular Grimoires, which disappear upon their owner's death, a 5 leaf clover Grimoire remains dormant until a new owner claims it.
