Announced just six weeks ago, Mortal Kombat 1 is now only two months away, and excitement among fans is reaching a fevered pitch. Following an impressive announcement trailer that confirmed the game's reboot, Mortal Kombat 1 wowed fans even more with its latest gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest. The new graphics, smoother animations, and innovative Kameo Fighter system left fans in awe. However, despite these trailers, there are still many unknowns about Mortal Kombat 1.
Currently, most of the information about the game has been released through the official website and promotional materials. While it has been confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will take place in Fire God Liu Kang's new timeline and feature beloved characters with updated looks and backstories, the specific changes to these fighters have not yet been revealed. Fortunately, recent bios released on the game's official website provide fans with some new insights.
What Mortal Kombat 1's Bios Reveal About Its Fighters
The official bios of Mortal Kombat 1 introduce Liu Kang as the game's most significant character, known as the God of Fire. After Raiden merged with Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat 11, he gained god powers and seized control of Kronika's Hourglass. In order to align with his own preferences, Liu Kang created a new timeline, essentially resetting the series. While this new timeline brought about a new era of peace, it also impacted the dynamics of some beloved characters.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero are notable examples of fighters whose backstories have been altered. Instead of being archenemies driven by an eternal quest for revenge, Scorpion and Sub-Zero are depicted as brothers who both serve the Lin Kuei faithfully. In the events leading up to Mortal Kombat 1, their father, the grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, has recently passed away, leaving Sub-Zero to assume leadership. Initially, Scorpion seems proud of his brother's ascension. However, tensions arise in their relationship as Sub-Zero's rule over the Lin Kuei involves abandoning certain ancient traditions in an effort to modernize the clan and establish them as one of Earthrealm's most formidable factions.
Kitana and Mileena form another iconic duo in Mortal Kombat, but with a twist. Unlike in the original game, Mileena is not a deformed clone of Kitana but her biological sister and the rightful heir to Outworld's throne. Kitana harbors no jealousy towards her sister and instead fights alongside her as Mileena prepares to take the throne. However, Mileena suffers from a deadly disease called Tarkat, which Kitana helps her conceal. Unfortunately, the disease causes Mileena to act impulsively, causing doubts about her ability to rule and prompting others to rally behind Kitana.
As for Raiden, once a powerful Elder God, he has now lost his divine powers and lives as an ordinary mortal. Alongside Kung Lao, they lead peaceful lives tolling the fields in their hometown of Fengjian. While Raiden is content with this tranquil existence, Kung Lao yearns for excitement and adventure. His wish comes true when Fire God Liu Kang invites them to join his team of Earthrealm champions. So far, only two other fighters have been confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1: Johnny Cage and Kenshi.
Johnny Cage's backstory remains largely unchanged, depicting him as a fading Hollywood star who is summoned to fulfill a greater purpose. However, Kenshi's backstory diverges from the norm. The Takahashi clan, once revered warriors, suffered a devastating defeat in a major battle five centuries ago. As a result, they were forced to align with the Bakuto clan, which eventually evolved into the notorious Yakuza. Kenshi now yearns to liberate his family from the shackles of the Yakuza by locating their ancestral sword, known as Sento.
Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to be launched on September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
