In Sonic Superstars, players can join up to four players and navigate through various levels as iconic characters such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Additionally, there is an unlockable character named Trip the Sungazer, who can be used in all game modes.
Trip the Sungazer is a newly introduced character in Sonic Superstars, designed by Naoto Ohshima and Takashi Izuka. Notably, Trip is personally created by Naoto Ohshima, marking their first Sonic character since their involvement in Knuckles Chaotix for the Sega 32X. Initially, Trip starts the game as an antagonist, collaborating with Fang the Hunter and Doctor Eggman (albeit with some reluctance).
How to Unlock Trip the Sungazer
Players must first finish the entire main story and defeat the highly challenging final boss in the Egg Fortress Zone before they can select Trip as a playable character. Once the boss is conquered and the credits roll, players will gain the option to choose Trip in the character select menu, as well as unlock Trip's Story.
Trip's Story offers a more challenging story mode centered around Trip as the sole protagonist. It takes place after the main story and features her confronting Fang and a group of rebellious Eggrobos, who are causing even more mischief. The levels have been modified to increase the difficulty and also to promote the utilization of Trip's unique abilities.
Trip's Gameplay
When controlling Trip, players can utilize her double jump and rolling abilities. Although similar to Amy's double jump, Trip's lacks the hammer necessary to bounce on spiked or electrified enemies. By holding the button after a double jump, Trip transforms into a spiked wheel capable of clinging to walls and ceilings. Once attached, she can effortlessly roll along the surface, granting her access to areas that would otherwise be inaccessible to other characters.
Trip possesses additional powers that can be unlocked by harnessing the power of the Chaos Emeralds. With the Extra Emerald, she gains the ability to launch fireballs as a long-range attack. By collecting all seven Emeralds, Trip unlocks her Super Form. In her Super Form, Trip can transform into a Dragon, granting her the power of flight and the ability to breathe a stream of fire. On the ground, Trip can initiate flight by holding the jump button. Once airborne, she can freely navigate using the direction buttons or control stick. Holding the jump button while in the air enables Trip to unleash her fiery breath attack.
Sonic Superstars is available across various gaming platforms including PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
