The announcement of Sonic Superstars has generated a lot of excitement among fans of Sega's iconic blue hedgehog. The game's vibrant graphics, charming animations, and impressive reveal trailer have already captured the attention of future players. What's more, the release date for Sonic Superstars is set for Fall 2023, which is earlier than many fans anticipated.

However, there are some concerns about whether this surprise 2D Sonic game will live up to expectations. While initial previews from the Summer Game Fest Play Days event have shown promise, and the trailer showcases Sonic Mania-esque physics, there are still areas of Sonic Superstars that could use improvement. Co-developed by Sonic Team and Naoto Ohshima's personal company Arzest, the game needs to deliver an exceptional experience in order to achieve the success Sega is hoping for.

Why Fans Might be Skeptical of Sonic Superstars

The decision to entrust Sonic Team with the development of Superstars may cause concern among fans, considering their previous underwhelming release, Sonic Forces. This hesitation is further compounded by Arzest's involvement, as their last project, Balan Wonderworld, was widely regarded as one of the worst games of 2021. Interestingly, Balan Wonderworld was directed by Yuji Naka, a co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, who is not involved in Superstars. This absence may provide an opportunity for Arzest to showcase their capabilities in the 2.5D title, as the director's influence plays a significant role in a game's success or failure.

Sonic Superstars' Surprising Price Tag

Sega's desire to release more Classic Sonic games is not surprising given the massive success of Sonic Mania in 2017. Considered one of the highest-rated Sonic games in years, Mania offered players a nostalgic-filled experience, complete with ironic stages and new additions. Many players found the $40 price tag well worth it, especially considering the approximately five and a half hours it took to complete a basic playthrough with a chosen set of characters, without actively seeking out Chaos Emeralds or bonus stages.

However, it's important to acknowledge that a lot has changed in the gaming industry and the global economy over the past five years. Players worldwide are currently facing increasing prices for must-play titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which now costs $70. Although it's becoming common knowledge that video games are becoming more expensive, Sonic fans were still taken aback by Sega's plans to sell Sonic Superstars for $60, especially when compared to the price of Sonic Mania.

Sonic Superstars is set to be released in Fall 2023 for various platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The recent $20 price increase has caught fans by surprise, as many prospective players question whether the game will offer a similar short playtime as its predecessor, Mania, which may not justify the higher cost.
