The Shocking Price Tag of Sonic Superstars

Sega's upcoming 2D Sonic Superstars will be a full-priced release, but fans are eagerly awaiting the throwback title With exciting new details being released, it's clear that the game will be worth the investment for die-hard Sonic fans

At $59.99, Sonic Superstars is set to offer fans a unique experience that merges the beloved 2D gameplay of the Genesis titles with an exciting new 3D aesthetic. The game's announcement at the Summer Game Fest 2023 showcase, alongside other highly anticipated titles such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Like a Dragon Gaiden, came as a pleasant surprise to many fans. Sonic Superstars promises to be more than just a Sonic game, with playable characters including Tails, Knuckles, and Amy each bringing their own unique abilities to the table. Sega has also shared additional details about the game, including its launch price.

The upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog co-op game has been announced as a full-priced release by Sega, with a starting price of $59.99 USD. This may come as a surprise to some, as initial expectations were for a free-to-play title or a lower price point similar to Sonic Forces in 2017. The game is scheduled to launch digitally and physically in Fall 2023, with more information on future packages and bonuses to be provided at a later date.

In addition to the pricing details, Sega's statement also shared more information about the game itself. The powers showcased in the trailer are confirmed to be from the Chaos Emeralds, a recurring element in the series. These abilities will enable Sonic and his friends to create clones, ride waterfalls, and more. Players will face off against classic Sonic the Hedgehog villain Dr. Eggman, as well as Fang the Sniper and a new character created by Sonic's original character designer, Naoto Ohshima.

The initial reward for Sonic Superstars newsletter subscribers is a contemporary Amy skin that may also be available for other characters. The fact that Amy is the first character to receive a skin is most likely linked to Sonic CD's 30th anniversary in 2023, as it was her debut game. Fans have likened this game to Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. series due to its return to the franchise's origins and addition of 4-player co-op. Sonic Superstars is set to be launched in Fall 2023 and will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
