Sonic Superstars introduces seven Chaos Emerald powers, which players can collect and use to enhance their gameplay experience.
Each Chaos Emerald grants a distinct power that can be utilized by any playable character within the game. These powers include the ability to create clones, shoot while in midair, and grow vines. By obtaining all seven Chaos Emeralds, players gain the ability to transform into a Super version of their character, enhancing their speed and granting them invincibility.
Sega has unveiled the complete list of powers available to players in the highly anticipated Sonic Superstars cooperative multiplayer platform game. This new installment in the series harks back to the classic 2D platforming origins on the Genesis, much like Sonic Mania from 2017. However, Sonic Superstars places a greater emphasis on cooperative gameplay, allowing up to four players on screen simultaneously. Additionally, the iconic Chaos Emeralds, traditionally serving as collectibles or plot devices, will now play an active role in gameplay.
Traditionally, the Chaos Emeralds in the Sonic franchise have served as keys to unlocking the formidable Super Sonic through Special Stage challenges or as key components collected throughout the story to save the day. Sonic Superstars, on the other hand, will reward players with benefits for every single Chaos Emerald they collect, resembling the mechanics seen in Sonic Colors' Wisps. Sega has now revealed the specific powers that each of these seven Emeralds will bestow upon the players.
What is the Full List of Chaos Emerald Powers?
In a recent interview with Sonic Team leader Takashi Iizuka by Game Informer, he explains that players can collect each Emerald in a Special Stage, similar to previous games, by swinging from floating bubbles towards a goal. Iizuka highlights that every Chaos Emerald provides a unique ability that can be utilized by any playable character in the game. What's more, players can select these seven powers, namely Avatar, Bullet, Water, Ivy, Vision, Slow, and Extra, each with its own cooldown timer for usage.
Blue Emerald - Avatar (Produces clones to attack all at once)
Red Emerald - Bullet (Shoots the player in a direction midair)
Cyan Emerald - Water (Allows players to travel more easily in water)
Green Emerald - Ivy (Grows vines that can reach high areas)
Purple Emerald - Vision (Reveals hidden platforms and items)
Yellow Emerald - Slow (Slows down everything on screen for better reactions)
White Emerald - Bonus (Enables an additional move based on the chosen character)
Each of these abilities can enhance the player's experience and align with the cooperative aspect of Sonic Superstars. The Bonus action, in particular, is unique as it varies depending on the character selected. Sonic regains his iconic homing attack, Amy is able to hurl her hammer, Knuckles can deliver powerful punches to enemies, and Tails has the ability to unleash a tornado with his two tails, eliminating any adversaries in his path. These additional power-ups are entirely optional and not essential for completing the game.
Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds in Sonic Superstars allows players to transform into a powerful Super version of their character. According to Iizuka, all playable characters, including Amy Rose, will have the ability to become super. This is in line with the recent introduction of Super Amy in Sonic Origins Plus. While in these Super forms, players will become invincible and experience increased speed. However, it is important to note that the ring count will gradually decrease, so players must keep an eye on it. Sonic Superstars is set to release in Fall 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
