Where to Find the Submersible

In the world of Forgotten Realms, Umberlee is a malevolent and cruel goddess associated with storms and the sea. In the game Baldur's Gate 3, players have the opportunity to visit one of Umberlee's temples by heading south from the Gray Harbor waypoint. Upon arrival, they will witness the temple's inhabitants mourning the loss of one of their sisters.

To embark on the quest "Avenge the Drowned," players can speak to Flood Tide Allandra Grey, who leads a solemn ritual for their fallen sister. However, the target of their vengeance is well concealed, and he also plays a crucial role in two other significant quests. While it is possible for players to complete all three quests within a single playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3, they must exercise caution and carefully consider the order of their actions.

Umberlee's temple welcomes visitors, located south of the Gray Harbor waypoint. Simply follow this path and approach a gathering of women mourning their fallen companion. To initiate the next step, seek out Allandra Grey, who can be identified by her position facing away from the temple's entrance.

Allandra seeks retribution and, when requested, she will accept a tribute in the form of the statement, "I've brought my weapon to aid in avenging her demise." She will explain that her fellow priestess perished due to a collision with a "metal monster," which refers to a submersible vessel. Allandra will implore the party to confront and eliminate the master of this monstrous machine, thus prompting the quest to be recorded in the journal.

To locate the submersible, head to Flymm Cargo, a warehouse on the eastern side of the harbor from the Gray Harbor waypoint. The entrance door is locked and off-limits, but the party can gain access by leaping onto the roof from an east walkway and then descending a staircase on the southern side. From this vantage point, the party remains unseen.

Inside the warehouse, a small group of wargs, formidable wolf-like creatures, will engage the party upon detection. Luckily, they pose little challenge for an Act 3 party. Once the wargs are defeated, proceed to the northwest corner of the warehouse and begin shifting crates. Beneath them lies a concealed large hatch.

Once in the basement, proceed straight ahead from the ladder and pass through the door to discover a concealed submersible bay. Within this area, there is a dwarf known as Redhammer the Deviser who serves as both the creator and captain of the submersible.

The timing of this encounter is crucial. Redhammer and his submersible are the means by which the party can access the Iron Throne, an underwater prison established by Gortash. In order to complete the quests "Save the Gondians" and "Rescue the Grand Duke," the players must journey to the Iron Throne. By persuading Redhammer to navigate his vessel to the Iron Throne, he will enter the submersible and become invulnerable to attacks. However, upon returning from the Iron Throne, Redhammer will reappear in the bay. It is essential to allow for a sufficient period of rest so that the Gondian survivors are not present during the assassination.

If the party chooses to visit the Iron Throne first, the quest "Avenge the Drowned" will become unavailable. This means that even though Redhammer is still alive and accessible, players cannot volunteer to seek revenge for the Umberlee priestess if they have already received assistance from him to reach the underwater prison.

The good news is that players do not need Redhammer to be alive in order to visit the Iron Throne. It is only important for the party to be aware of the existence of the prison, which they can learn from an earlier conversation with Redhammer or from the Gondian workers at the Steel Watch Foundry. Once they know that the Iron Throne is located below, the party can operate the submersible themselves.

With all of this in mind, the best order of operations is:

Speak to Allandra Grey and start the quest "Avenge the Drowned."

Find Redhammer under Flymm Cargo and convince him to mention the Iron Throne.

End the conversation immediately after getting the info.

Kill Redhammer.

Use the submersible hatch to reach the Iron Throne and rescue the prisoners.

Please return to Allandra to finish the quest and receive the Wavemother's Robe. Equipping this attire grants various benefits, including a +1 Armor Class, resistance to Cold and Fire damage, the ability to Create or Destroy Water, and an extra +1d4 hit points whenever the wearer begins their turn in water. This feature functions both in and out of combat, and can be applied to water created by casting spells or using a bottle.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on macOS, PC, and is coming to PS5 on September 6.
