Lucy Lawless' iconic character from Xena: Warrior Princess has been given an incredible cosplay treatment, complete with her trademark weaponry. Originally introduced as a disposable antagonist in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Lawless' character quickly gained immense popularity, leading to the creation of a spinoff series. Running for six seasons from 1995 to 2001, Xena: Warrior Princess surpassed the popularity of its predecessor and transformed the eponymous heroine into a beloved figure in pop culture. In a recent Instagram post by Lauren Gianna, a striking cosplay image captures the essence of Lawless' formidable warrior. Take a look at the image below:
Will The Xena Fandom Ever Get To See A Series Reboot?
Dressed in Xena's exquisitely crafted leather armor, the cosplay showcases a chakram, a deadly throwing weapon renowned for its razor-sharpness. Moreover, Gianna can be seen proudly carrying Xena's ever-present sword slung over her shoulder.
Since the conclusion of Xena: Warrior Princess in 2001, numerous attempts have been made to revive or reboot the franchise. Alongside a variety of spinoff books, comics, and videogames, Universal Studios had once planned to create a feature film, where Lawless would have reprised her role as Xena alongside her long-time co-star Renee O'Connor. Unfortunately, the project faced complications due to rights issues between Universal and the original producer and co-creator, Robert Tapert, resulting in its eventual halt in the development process.
In 2015, it seemed that the initial rights issues had been resolved, leading NBC to announce their intention to reboot Xena: Warrior Princess. The reboot, to be overseen by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, writer of Cowboy Bebop, aimed to delve deeper into the romantic relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, a dynamic that was only subtly touched upon in the original series. However, similar to the movie plans, NBC's reboot was put on hold when Grillo-Marxuach departed the project in 2017.
Despite these setbacks, there remains a significant amount of interest among the devoted fanbase of the original show for a potential reboot. As recently as 2021, Lawless herself expressed her eagerness to return alongside O'Connor and "pass the torch" to a new generation of actors. Considering the trend of 1990s shows being revived and rebooted, it is possible that Xena: Warrior Princess may eventually have the opportunity to make a comeback.
