Based on the released trailers, Mortal Kombat 1 seems to be both a nostalgic return to its roots and a modernized version with new features. While the rebooted setting will please longtime fans, the introduction of the Kameo Fighter system, airborne combos, and fresh movesets will keep all players on their toes. These features only scratch the surface of what Mortal Kombat 1 has in store.
After a significant break, the Mortal Kombat Kombat Kast has made a triumphant comeback. During a 45-minute livestream, developers of Mortal Kombat 1 showcase live gameplay demonstrations, explain the new movesets of characters, and introduce the game's mechanics. The latest Kombat Kast revealed new fighters such as Rain and Smoke, and provided details on how the Kameo system will function in the game. However, the most crucial information unveiled during the Kombat Kast is Johnny Cage's new ability exclusive to his character, which could potentially make him overwhelmingly powerful.
Mortal Kombat 1's Johnny Cage Could Be Extremely Overpowered
The Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Kast recently shifted from discussing Scorpion's new moveset to focusing on Johnny Cage, a beloved character in the franchise since his debut in the original 1992 Mortal Kombat. While long-time fans will recognize most of Cage's familiar moves, there are notable changes in Mortal Kombat 1.
One significant alteration in Johnny Cage's moveset is the absence of his magical abilities. The iconic green magic that defined his character is no longer present. However, many of his signature moves remain intact. For example, the iconic Shadow Kick still exists, but with a different visual effect. Instead of emanating a green light, his moves now have a blurry, watery appearance.
Additionally, Cage receives a few more close-range hand-to-hand moves and additional kicks in Mortal Kombat 1. These enhancements make him even more formidable in close combat situations, further enhancing his lethality.
However, in Mortal Kombat 1, the absence of magic is the major change in Johnny Cage's moveset. But there is an even more significant addition to his character. During the Kombat Kast, it was revealed that Johnny Cage now possesses a new ability called the Hype Meter. This meter, represented by a star in the bottom corner of the screen, just above the three-bar Super Meter, is exclusive to Johnny Cage. When the Hype Meter is full and activated, it allows Johnny Cage to execute multiple special moves consecutively, with no delay between them.
This new Hype Meter has the potential to make Johnny Cage one of the most dominant fighters in the game, as demonstrated during the Kombat Kast. In the live demo, Johnny Cage activated the Hype Meter and effortlessly performed three Shadow Kicks in quick succession, causing significant damage to the opponent's health bar. The Hype Meter also seems relatively easy to fill, as demonstrated by the live demonstrator who was able to completely fill it with just three swift taunts. Although experienced players can punish these taunts, if a skilled Johnny Cage player successfully fills and activates their Hype Meter, the outcome of the match could be determined within seconds. It is highly likely that the developers will make substantial adjustments to Johnny Cage's Hype Meter before the game's launch or in the days following it.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
