Compared to other spells in Baldur’s Gate 3, Enchantment School abilities primarily enhance the caster and their allies' capabilities during specific actions. As an adaptation of D&D rules, Enchantment spells in Baldur’s Gate 3 focus on altering the caster’s interactions with creatures, effectively manipulating the odds in various gameplay elements such as Attack Rolls, Saves, ordinary Checks, and overall interactions.
In the game's roll-based system, Enhancement spells are essential additions to a player’s arsenal, especially for spellcasters who possess the ability to utilize these buffs. However, within the array of Enhancement spells in the D&D repertoire, some outperform others.
10 Confusion (4th-Level)
In RPGs like Pokemon, players are aware of the debilitating move known as Confusion. This unpredictable maneuver can impose inconvenient consequences on opponents, such as interrupting their turns or even causing them to harm themselves. Similarly, in Baldur's Gate 3, the spell Confusion induces magical confusion on individuals who fail to overcome its WIS Save.
When under the effect of Confusion, a group of targets will aimlessly wander for up to 3 turns. During these turns, they may randomly attack or even choose to skip their actions entirely. When utilized against a formidable creature, Confusion has the potential to halt a charging opponent and their accompanying mobs.
9 Otto’s Irresistible Dance (6th-Level)
Otto's Irresistible Dance, named after its creator who lived in the Greyhawk campaign setting in Oerth, is a spell in Baldur's Gate 3 that causes a powerful Enchantment effect. When cast, this spell compels a target to dance uncontrollably. Failing the initial Wisdom saving throw results in the target's attackers gaining an advantage on their attack rolls. Additionally, the affected creature experiences a disadvantage on their own attack rolls and Dexterity saving throws. When utilized strategically, Otto's Irresistible Dance can make bosses vulnerable to deadly Evocation spells.
8 Dominate Person (5th-Level)
Humanoid enemies in Baldur's Gate 3 can pose a significant challenge in the RPG, as they share similarities with the player characters in terms of abilities and strength. However, a skilled spellcaster with high Wisdom can exert their control over these formidable humanoids through the use of Dominate Person. This spell grants the player's party a valuable opportunity to have the dominated enemy fight on their side, before the rest of the group deals the finishing blow.
The duration of Dominate Person is 10 turns, providing a considerable advantage to the party, especially if used against a boss-level opponent. The spell's requirement for a Wisdom Save only upon getting hit is advantageous for the player, particularly when facing a difficult target that is not easily struck. With the addition of appropriate enhancements to the target's Armor Class or reductions in its Saving Throws, players can maximize the potential of Dominate Person to a great extent.
7 Crown Of Madness (2nd-Level)
The bosses encountered in Baldur’s Gate 3 can easily wipe out an unprepared party with just a few attacks, making them a formidable challenge in most situations. However, players who are familiar with their weapons and abilities can turn this strength to their advantage by using Crown of Madness. This second-level spell is particularly effective against enemies who are weak in Wisdom Saves, which is often the case for characters who prioritize other stats in the RPG.
When used correctly, Crown of Madness induces a disturbing madness in a humanoid target, compelling them to attack the nearest creature for three turns, even if that creature happens to be an ally. With a skilled spellcaster, players can manipulate a boss into fighting their own minions, allowing the rest of the party to focus on recovering or preparing for the major battle ahead.
6 Hold Person (2nd-Level)
The traditional Hold Person spell in D&D gameplay only immobilizes the target and prevents them from moving. However, in Baldur's Gate 3, Hold Person takes it up a notch by granting all attackers within a 3-meter range an automatic Critical Hit whenever they successfully hit the target.
What makes Hold Person particularly overpowered is its duration of 10 turns, combined with a Wisdom Save that relies on a less commonly prioritized stat in the game. With the right strategy, a spellcaster can immobilize an enemy while a melee specialist easily annihilates them with just a few powerful strikes.
5 Bane (1st-Level)
In Baldur’s Gate 3, players should pay close attention to both their stats and the results of their rolls during gameplay. This is especially important because enemies who cannot roll higher than the player's AC will be unable to land powerful attacks. Players can exploit this advantage by utilizing the Enchantment spell Bane, which is highly effective.
Bane has the ability to target up to three creatures and requires them to make a CHA Save. If they fail, they will suffer a penalty for 10 turns, reducing both their Attack Rolls and Saves by 1d4. Although the use of lower-numbered dice may seem underwhelming, players using Bane on mobs or even bosses with high bonuses can continuously hinder their targets with a roll penalty ranging from -1 to -4.
4 Sleep (1st-Level)
Combat is usually inevitable when NPCs become angry during a player's Baldur's Gate 3 playthrough. However, players can use the sleep spell as a tactful way to temporarily delay a potentially dangerous confrontation. By casting this spell, players can cause any combination of creatures with a total of 24 Hit Points or fewer to fall asleep. Using higher-level spell slots increases the capacity to affect creatures with higher Hit Points.
Successfully using the sleep spell will cause the affected target(s) to remain unconscious for two turns. This ability can be used both in and out of combat, giving players the opportunity to bypass guards unnoticed, steal items from merchants, or escape from formidable opponents with a head start.
3 Bless (1st-Level)
In roll-based games like Baldur's Gate 3, success or failure in a check often comes down to a single digit. Failing to meet the Difficulty Class in exploration or going below an opponent's Armor Class is not just a miss, but also an opportunity for them to retaliate. Using Bless, a caster can grant a 1d4 bonus to Saving Throws and Attack Rolls for up to three creatures.
Despite its simplicity, the 1d4 bonus can make a significant difference in determining the outcome of a battle. While it may seem excessive to excessively boost the performance of heavy-hitting DPS units, erring on the side of caution is preferable to missing an attack.
2 Heroism (1st-Level)
Boosting maximum Hit Points in Baldur's Gate 3 is primarily limited to character leveling and having a high Constitution. However, even a small amount of Temporary Hit Points can greatly increase a character's chances of survival in crucial encounters. While players can only obtain Temporary HP from one source at a time, the spell Heroism is particularly advantageous as a 1st-level buffing spell.
Using Heroism, characters can enchant themselves or a target to become immune to Frightening effects as long as Concentration is maintained. Additionally, players receive a consistent supply of 5 Temporary Hit Points per turn. This transforms Temporary HP into more of an informal shield rather than an extension of one's actual Hit Points, and its reset per turn makes it an invaluable tool for survival.
1 Vicious Mockery (Cantrip)
Vicious Mockery is an indispensable spell in a Bard's arsenal, not just because it suits their penchant for performance by inflicting magically debilitating insults. It is a highly efficient spell for a Bard due to its power as a mere Cantrip. When cast, Vicious Mockery inflicts 1d4 Psychic Damage on the target.
Although this damage may seem lackluster for a Cantrip, the true danger of this spell lies in its additional effect. The affected creature is now at a Disadvantage on its next Attack Roll. Despite the spell's modest damage, being able to immediately debuff targets and render them ineffective in combat is its true strength.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available for PC. A PS5 version is set to release on September 6th, and an Xbox Series X/S version is currently in development.
