Netflix is set to bring Skull Island to life in the form of an anime series. The iconic giant ape, King Kong, first made his appearance in the 1933 film King Kong and has since become the centerpiece of a successful franchise, including the recent MonsterVerse by Legendary Pictures. Unlike previous Kong movies, the reboot series introduced in Kong: Skull Island (2017) allowed Kong to survive and remain on Skull Island until the sequel, Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), set in the present day.
The MonsterVerse is a shared fictional universe that incorporates characters from Toho Co., Ltd., including Godzilla. Warner Bros., who acquired the rights to King Kong through Time Warner (which had obtained them from RKO), collaborated with Legendary to create the MonsterVerse, a platform that brings together classic and new kaiju in an American-produced narrative. As the alpha titans of the MonsterVerse, Godzilla and King Kong serve as the focal points of the franchise, and the Skull Island series further highlights their significance by introducing a new group of explorers to Kong's domain. This animated production marks the first TV series within the MonsterVerse, raising expectations for the upcoming show.

The new trailer for the Skull Island anime showcases Kong engaged in battles with the monstrous creatures that inhabit the island. This extended trailer delves deeper into the characters, monsters, and storyline of the anime series compared to the previously released teaser. Alongside the returning monsters from Kong: Skull Island such as the giant squid, prehistoric-looking Terror Bird, and the Skullcrawlers, there are also numerous new creatures that inhabit the island.
Judging by the trailer, it appears that the three main characters not only have to face off against the island's monsters but also contend with other explorers armed with guns who have sinister intentions for the creatures and Kong himself. Charlie, Annie, and Mike, the young trio trapped on the island, strive to escape while also ensuring the protection of some of the island's creatures, not all of which are monstrous.

Skull Island Story Details
The Skull Island anime is set in the 1990s, taking place after the events of Kong: Skull Island, where James Conrad, Preston Packard, and Mason Weaver first encounter Kong, and before Kong is captured by Monarch and confined in Godzilla vs. Kong. The series revolves around different groups of explorers who become stranded on the island. Charlie leads Mike on an expedition to uncover the secrets of this enigmatic location, but their ship eventually sinks, leaving them and the rest of the crew stranded on the perilous and untamed island.
Annie, who arrived at the island ahead of her friends, becomes disoriented and separated from her exploratory crew. Her sudden disappearance compels Charlie and Mike to embark on a mission to find her. The initial episodes of Skull Island will primarily revolve around the boys' determined quest. Remarkably, Annie manages to survive on her own on the island and even forms a bond with one of its monstrous inhabitants. Meanwhile, additional explorers arrive on the island, including Charlie’s father. As they strive to stay alive, they must also thwart the malevolent forces that threaten to disrupt Kong’s delicate ecosystem.
Skull Island Trailer
In the initial trailer released on May 23, 2022, for the Skull Island anime, a glimpse of what's to come is provided. The teaser showcases Annie and a team of explorers bidding farewell to their helicopter, only to be taken by surprise as a colossal octopus emerges from the sea and pulls it beneath the waves. This sets the stage for Annie's entrapment on Skull Island and her subsequent struggle for survival. Subsequently, Mike and Charlie find themselves stranded on the island's shore, where they encounter a multitude of perilous creatures and humans armed with guns.
With a TV-14 rating, there appears to be a significant amount of animated violence and death in a setting known as "Skull Island". Later in the trailer, Annie makes another appearance, suggesting that the trio will not be separated for long. It is also evident that Annie has acquired survival skills during their journey and will be responsible for protecting the boys on the island, despite their initial intention to rescue her. Towards the end of the Skull Island anime trailer, King Kong is seen roaring, emphasizing that while the focus may be on the humans, Kong remains the central character of the show.
How Will Skull Island Fit Into The MonsterVerse?
According to a tweet by Duffield, the events of Skull Island unfold in the 1990s, ensuring that there will be no overlap with characters from Kong: Skull Island or any subsequent movies. One aspect of the MonsterVerse storyline that remains unexplained is how Kong transitioned from being free on Skull Island to residing in a Monarch-enclosed terrarium. In addition to this, there are various other unanswered questions within the MonsterVerse, providing the Skull Island anime with ample opportunity to delve into the island itself and further explore Kong as a character.
