Skull Island has brought forth a revelation in the MonsterVerse by unveiling Monster Island, establishing a significant link to Toho's Godzilla universe. Recognized as a pivotal element in the Showa era of Godzilla films, Monster Island holds immense importance within the franchise. Surprisingly, Legendary's MonsterVerse movies have thus far refrained from exploring this crucial location.
Introduced in the 1967 film Son of Godzilla, Monster Island is famously known as the residence of Godzilla and numerous other Toho kaiju creatures, including Anguirus, Rodan, Gorosaurus, Kumonga, Mothra, and more. While humans did occasionally venture to the island, it primarily served as a sanctuary where the colossal monsters could coexist peacefully. In the MonsterVerse, however, no such location exists. Skull Island has been likened to Monster Island, although there are notable distinctions between the two. One major difference is that Godzilla does not inhabit Skull Island. Nevertheless, due to its abundance of monstrous inhabitants, Skull Island is considered the closest equivalent in the MonsterVerse to the iconic Toho locale.
MonsterVerse Finally Confirms Skull Island Is Monster Island
The MonsterVerse made a significant reference to "Monster Island" in the Netflix anime series, Skull Island, which is considered part of the same universe as Legendary's Godzilla and Kong films. In episode 6 of Skull Island, the character Charlie expresses his desire to leave Skull Island and return to civilization, mentioning that he doesn't want to stay on "Monster Island" with Dog. While this is not an official name for Skull Island in the MonsterVerse, it is still a noteworthy moment as it establishes a connection between the two islands.
By explicitly mentioning its name through one of its characters, the MonsterVerse unequivocally clarifies that Skull Island serves as its rendition of Monster Island. Although there are certain distinctions, the abundance of colossal creatures effectively establishes the connection within the franchise. Being the habitat for several MonsterVerse Titans and numerous smaller monsters, Skull Island boasts a diverse ecology that allows the human protagonists of the show to encounter a variety of dangerous and peaceful beasts. This mirrors the experiences of the main characters in Son of Godzilla and All Monsters Attack on Monster Island.
Will Skull Island Return In MonsterVerse’s Movies?
While the connection between Skull Island and Toho's Godzilla universe is intriguing, its significance in the future of the MonsterVerse remains uncertain. Although it may not reappear after being devastated by a storm prior to Godzilla vs. Kong, the synopsis for Godzilla x: Kong: The New Empire teases the possibility of uncovering the "mysteries of Skull Island," suggesting that the storm may dissipate and the island could gain more attention. Should this occur, it is conceivable that additional Titans may find refuge on Skull Island, solidifying its newfound connection as Monster Island.
