Warning: Spoilers for Skull Island follow.
Skull Island introduced a variety of monsters into the MonsterVerse, including a new Titan. The eight-episode anime series on Netflix is now officially part of the MonsterVerse, which means that everything that happens in the series is considered canon alongside Legendary's four Godzilla and Kong films. This implies that the majority of the monster species encountered by the main characters during their adventures on Skull Island were already present in the MonsterVerse, but were not depicted in Kong: Skull Island.
Kong: Skull Island offered a glimpse into Kong's home, but given the vastness and complexity of the MonsterVerse location, it's not surprising that the movie couldn't fully delve into the island's ecology. The island is teeming with countless unique creatures, and the 2015 film could only showcase a fraction of them. However, the Skull Island anime released on Netflix expanded on the Skull Island ecosystem by subtly introducing 13 new creatures, both large and small, to the MonsterVerse. Surprisingly, one of these newly introduced creatures turned out to be a Titan.
13 Crab Monster
Giant crabs, which burrow in the sandy shores of Skull Island, emerged throughout episode 2, posing as significant threats to the main characters. These creatures made it challenging for the humans to traverse the beach without encountering them. While they share similarities with the crabs featured in Godzilla vs. Kong, their distinct designs and sizes establish them as separate species.
12 Crystal Pillbug Monster
11 Aloe Turtle
An enormous creature resembling a pillbug, with a hermit crab-like shell, boasts a luminous underside. With astonishing agility, it effortlessly evaded the mercenaries on Skull Island. While its sheer size posed a formidable obstacle for the human protagonists, it served merely as a convenient projectile for Kong in the climactic showdown.
One of the most distinctive additions to the MonsterVerse mythos on Skull Island was the aloe turtle in episode 2. The turtle's shell is adorned with aloe leaves, providing it with a natural camouflage. Additionally, it can bury its head and limbs in the sand, further enhancing its ability to remain undetected by predators. In a later part of the story, the humans made use of the aloe leaves from the turtle to successfully treat Mike's infection.
10 Dog Monster
One of the main concerns upon the arrival of the visiting mercenary group on Skull Island was the presence of a massive canine creature that inhabited the area. This formidable monster was presented as the loyal companion of Annie, the female protagonist of the show. Resembling a lion with its impressive mane, this creature, simply referred to as "Dog" in the series, stood out as the sole species in the series not originally from Skull Island. Interestingly, both Dog and his father resided on a nearby island.
9 Giant Crocodile
Skull Island's rivers are home to menacing crocodile monsters, bearing a striking resemblance to the now-extinct Kaprosuchus species. Possessing elongated legs surpassing those of typical crocodiles and alligators, these creatures exhibit remarkable agility. However, Charlie and Mike were fortunate enough to evade becoming their meal, as Kong swiftly intervened, devouring one of these creatures.
8 Grass Monster
While venturing through Skull Island, the group of mercenaries encountered a peculiar creature adorned with sprawling red grass blades on its back. Despite its feline vocalizations, this monster bears a resemblance to a terrier dog while maintaining a gentle temperament. In the penultimate episode of Skull Island's first season, an astonishing revelation unveils that this particular species forms a part of Kong's dietary preferences on the island.
7 Giant Carnivorous Dodo
In episode 4 of Skull Island, Charlie and Mike came face to face with a creature resembling a significantly larger dodo. Astonishingly, this seemingly carnivorous creature exhibited aggression, setting it apart from the extinct flightless bird species found in our world.
6 Giant Spider
5 Giant Pink Hawk
In the fourth episode of Skull Island, our protagonists, Mike, Charlie, and Annie, found themselves in an underground area that could potentially be an entrance to a tunnel leading to the Hollow Earth. This unexpected journey led them directly into the path of a colossal spider, which dwarfed the humans in size. This particular species of spider, discovered centuries later, appeared to have been sustained by feeding on unsuspecting individuals, as evidenced by the sword that was unearthed in the vicinity.
A significant issue faced by the main characters on Skull Island involved a gigantic pink hawk that had the ability to snatch humans with its sharp talons. In a surprising turn of events, the hawk was revealed to be a hidden ally of Kong. Astonishingly, this creature acted as a sort of sidekick, aiding Kong in battles and providing him with sustenance. This indicates that the two share a mutually beneficial relationship.
4 Goblin-like Monster
In Skull Island episode 6, Charlie utilized a torch to ignite a tree, only to discover that the tree harbored numerous bipedal monsters concealed within its branches. These creatures, bearing a design possibly influenced by the Chupacabra of Latin American folklore, launched coordinated attacks in swarms and had to be defended against by Dog. Referred to as "goblins" and "a pack of gremlins that once formed a tree" by the mercenaries, these monsters are only slightly larger than humans but pose a greater threat due to their collective fighting and traveling abilities.
3 Chameleon Monster
In Skull Island episode 7, Kong engaged in a battle with a group of colossal lizard creatures, with the support of his human companion. These creatures possessed an intriguing trait similar to chameleons, swiftly altering their colors to blend with their surroundings. Despite his astounding might, Kong mistakenly underestimated the sheer power of these monsters, thus endangering the life of his human ally. However, their survival and victory against the Skull Island chameleons were made possible by the invaluable assistance of a pink hawk.
2 Giant Centipede
1 Squid Titan
: In the climactic ending of Skull Island season 1, as Cap hurriedly ventured into the dense jungle to locate Charlie, he unexpectedly encountered an enormous centipede. Although not much information was disclosed about this extraordinary creature, its existence was tragically short-lived, succumbing within seconds of its introduction. Swiftly intervening just in the nick of time, Mike decisively eliminated the centipede by delivering a fatal blow from behind using a powerful flare gun.
Ever since the series began, the humans have found themselves facing a mysterious sea creature whose true form remained a secret until the season's final episode. Finally, in the thrilling season finale, Skull Island unveiled the enormous squid monster. With its electrifying and venomous abilities, the sea creature possessed incredibly long and powerful tentacles that effortlessly submerged ships and dragged people into the depths, even if they were far from the coast. Even Kong struggled to defeat this formidable adversary, but in the end, he emerged victorious.
The creature in question, as confirmed by his role in the series, was not only a MonsterVerse Titan but also an old rival to Kong on Skull Island. Any doubts regarding his Titan status were dispelled during the show's final battle, where it became evident that he surpassed Kong in size. Years ago, this squid Titan ravaged a human village, resulting in the death of Kong's friend. Based on speculations from the characters on Skull Island, it appeared that the creature's actions on the island were driven by its aspiration to assert dominance as the alpha. However, a confrontation between the two was avoided until the finale as the creature was unable to venture onto land, which would have given Kong a disadvantage while it remained in the water.
