A new video game called Skull Island: Rise of Kong has just been announced, featuring the iconic King Kong. The popularity of this legendary giant ape has seen a resurgence in recent years with the success of Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse movie franchise, and the highly anticipated film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, set to premiere in theaters next March. Kong's impact on the world of video games is significant, as he served as an inspiration for Nintendo's beloved character Donkey Kong.
Given the long history of the King Kong franchise, it's no surprise that there have been several video game adaptations over the years. In the 1980s, the great ape starred in a number of 2D titles. One notable adaptation came with Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of the original King Kong, which spawned its own first-person shooter game, praised as one of the better movie tie-in games of the 2000s. King Kong's most recent video game appearance was in a special crossover event with the popular game Call of Duty, where he reunited with his longtime nemesis Godzilla. However, this collaboration received mixed reviews from players.
A new video game based on King Kong called Skull Island: Rise of Kong has been announced. The game's trailer, which was recently uploaded to YouTube, starts with old and unclear footage of the island being taken over by dinosaurs while a young Kong watches. The trailer then shows gameplay footage of an adult Kong fighting against waves of dinosaurs and other monstrous creatures using various dodges and powerful attacks. The trailer concludes with the game's title and a release window of Fall 2023.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong is currently being developed by the indie studio IguanaBee Studios and will be published by GameMill Entertainment. GameMill Entertainment is known for creating licensed games such as Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, a game similar to Smash Bros, and Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues. The game was leaked on Amazon's Spanish website just prior to its official announcement. Translated descriptions on the website reveal that Skull Island: Rise of Kong will have players seek vengeance for the death of Kong's parents by Gaw, who is referred to as the "ultimate alpha predator." Gaw's name has appeared in previous King Kong materials as the leader of a dinosaur species known as the Deathrunners.
King Kong has not had a standalone game in a long time, with his last solo adventure being in the virtual reality sci-fi game titled KONG VR: Destination Skull Island in 2017. This makes Skull Island: Rise of Kong even more interesting, as it appears to allow players to experience a younger Kong before he became the fearsome creature that is known in the world of cinema. At the very least, Skull Island: Rise of Kong could serve as a satisfying preview for Kong's upcoming appearance in the film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire next year.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong is scheduled to be released in Fall 2023 on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
