Despite the absence of a dedicated button or feature in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for players to interact with the dogs in the game, one player managed to discover a clever workaround. Sharing their findings through a short video on social media, this player received appreciation from other Tears of the Kingdom players for fulfilling a need that Nintendo had overlooked.

In the previous installment, Breath of the Wild (released in 2017), players expressed frustration over the inability to pet the dogs, despite feeding them and assisting them in finding treasures. While Tears of the Kingdom made improvements in various aspects compared to Breath of the Wild, the inability to properly show affection to canine companions remained unchanged. In contrast, Square Enix's Final Fantasy 16 has gone a step further by rewarding players who engage in dog petting. However, determined Tears of the Kingdom players have proven that where there is a desire, there is always a way.

On Reddit's r/zelda subreddit, a player named Broad_Astronomer6126 shared a 29-second video showcasing their unique technique in Tears of the Kingdom. Using Link's Ultrahand ability, they ingeniously pet a nearby pup by manipulating the controller's right stick to align Link's hand with the dog's head and gently moving it up and down. Though the dog's animations remained unchanged, Broad_Astronomer6126 improvised by repositioning Link to continue pampering the pup. Within hours, the video gained traction, earning over 800 upvotes and garnering praise from fellow Tears of the Kingdom players who appreciated the simplicity of the petting method. Surprisingly, some players expressed bewilderment at Nintendo's omission of dedicated button prompts for this feature.

It is uncertain whether there will be any future updates that include changes to the dogs in Tears of the Kingdom. Despite the absence of a feature allowing players to pet dogs, the latest installment in the Zelda series is expected to be one of the top games of 2023, considering the abundance of both quality games and lovable canine companions.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can currently be played on the Nintendo Switch.
