Baldur's Gate 3 marks the highly anticipated comeback of the Baldur's Gate series. It follows the exciting journey of the individuals who manage to escape from an Illithid Ship, as they face countless challenges to survive and find a solution to rid themselves of the Illithid Tadpoles infesting their minds.
Taking heavy inspiration from the tabletop ruleset of D&D 5e, Baldur's Gate 3 shares numerous elements with it. However, there is one notable difference between the game and the tabletop version: the level cap. In this guide, we will explore the reasons behind the comparatively lower level cap in Baldur's Gate 3.
Early Access
Full Release
During the game's early access release, players can reach a maximum level of 5, which is sufficient for most spellcaster classes to unlock third-level spells. It is also the level at which Fighters, Rangers, Paladins, and Barbarians gain the ability to make Extra Attacks. This level cap allows players to access some of their subclass features and begin experimenting with feats and improving their ability scores. The level cap in Early Access is set to align with the content available in the first act of the game.
Larian Studios has announced that the game's final version will now feature an extended level cap of 12, surpassing the initial limit of 10 as previously stated during earlier stages of development.
All information from this point onward is derived from the D&D 5e Tabletop System. According to the system, players can utilize spells up to level 6 and can choose three feats or ability score improvements. Fighters, however, have the opportunity to acquire an additional feat or ability score improvement upon reaching level 6. It is important to note that this assumes that no alterations have been made to the spell levels and feat accessibility in comparison to the tabletop version.
Players will need to carefully consider any multiclass attempts, given the limited 12 levels available. This restriction means that spells of level 7 or higher are unavailable, and aspiring players who wish to access level 6 spells can only invest a maximum of 1 level into a non-spellcasting class. It is worth mentioning that Warlocks differ in their spellcasting mechanics and will gain a Level 6 "Mystic Arcanum" at Level 11. Baldur's Gate 3 will be released on August 3rd, 2023, for PC and Mac, with a PS5 release following on September 6th, 2023.
