Fog Crawlers, a unique monster in Fallout 76, may not have the opportunity to appear in future Fallout games due to the specific environment they require.
The inclusion of Fog Crawlers in future Fallout games relies on the availability of swamps or coastal areas where shrimp can survive, limiting their existence. However, their potential return in the next game is not completely out of the question and would depend on the setting and the occurrence of a nuclear catastrophe and high levels of radiation.
Fog Crawlers were terrifying in Fallout 76, but it's unlikely that they will appear in other games. While Fallout 76 introduced many concepts that could be used again, one of its unique monsters may not have the same opportunity. This has nothing to do with their creativity or quality. Fog Crawlers are visually striking creatures that provide interesting encounters in-game. The issue lies in the surrounding details of their existence.
Fallout 76 has presented solid ideas for the series' future, such as its treatment of Raiders. The game's multiplayer options, vast open world, and post-release updates offer unique opportunities not found in other games. The game's setting in Appalachia also gives it a distinct identity, similar to Fallout: New Vegas' Mojave Wasteland. These creative benefits are especially evident in the design of new monsters, allowing players to battle bizarre, frightening, and intriguing creatures.
Fog Crawlers May Not Come Back After Fallout 76
Among the many terrifying creatures in Fallout 76, the Fog Crawlers stand out as an exceptionally eerie presence. While they first appeared in Fallout 4's Far Harbor expansion, they have resurfaced in Appalachia as a significant threat. Originally resembling shrimp, the Fog Crawlers have now grown to immense sizes, acquiring horrifying strength and resilience along the way. Their current likeness to a disturbing combination of shrimp, praying mantis, and spider only adds to their nightmarish qualities. Traditional adversaries in the Fallout series like feral ghouls and raiders would be no match for the terrifying presence of the Fog Crawlers.
Regrettably, fans of the Fog Crawlers might be disappointed to learn that, similar to the unlikelihood of Synths appearing in Fallout 5, the return of the Fog Crawlers seems improbable as well. The primary reason for this lies in their origin story. Being highly mutated shrimp, the Fog Crawlers naturally require habitats where shrimp are typically found. Consequently, it would make sense for them to be present in locations like Far Harbor in Maine. However, areas lacking swamplands, coastlines, or other shrimp-inhabited regions would not provide suitable environments for them. Consequently, it would be illogical to have them appearing far away from their natural habitat.
The possibility of Fog Crawlers appearing in the next game depends on the location of Fallout 5. If the game takes place near the Gulf of Mexico, there is a solid chance of their return, considering the extreme radiation required for their mutation. However, the presence of a nuclear disaster would also be necessary. Due to the threats of radiation and the nature of Fog Crawlers, they would likely only be found in areas that players should approach in the late game.
Although Fog Crawlers are popular creatures in Fallout 76, their appearance in the next game is not guaranteed. While Fallout 5 can draw inspiration from Fallout 76's lore, the reliance of Fog Crawlers on a specific setting and environment may limit their inclusion. While many elements from Fallout 76 could be incorporated in future games, Fog Crawlers may not be one of them.
Fallout 76 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
