Chidori, one of the most renowned ninjutsu techniques in Naruto, is a tremendously powerful manifestation of Lightning Release. Both Kakashi Hatake and Sasuke Uchiha utilize Chidori as their iconic jutsu, showcasing their ingenuity and skill in employing various ninjutsu techniques throughout their battles. Their exceptional control over chakra and creativity have led to the development of numerous iterations of Chidori, surpassing its original application and reaching unparalleled levels. These modified versions of Chidori have played a crucial role in deciding significant confrontations in Naruto, particularly in the ultimate clashes between Naruto and Sasuke at the Valley of the End. Despite being a fundamental aspect of the series, Chidori has evolved into multiple variations, enhancing its destructive potential in distinct ways.

What Is Chidori?

Initially created by Kakashi Hatake in his teenage years, Chidori originated from his unsuccessful attempt to infuse lightning-based chakra into the Rasengan, a technique developed by his mentor Minato Namikaze. When executed correctly, the Chidori takes the form of concentrated electrical energy, resembling a shapeless mass. The initial step involves gathering intense lightning chakra around the user's hand, producing a high-pitched sound similar to the chirping of birds. In fact, the name Chidori translates to "One Thousand Birds."

Following the chakra accumulation, the user charges towards their opponent and strikes them. The swiftness of the technique and its capability to eliminate targets with a single blow made it highly favored for assassination purposes during Kakashi's Anbu days in Konohagakure. Nevertheless, this maneuver possesses a significant drawback. The user becomes fixated on their target, resulting in a narrowed field of vision and susceptibility to surprise attacks. The only means to overcome this disadvantage is through the use of dojutsu, such as the Sharingan, which enhances the user's perception of their surroundings.

More often than not, this means that the majority of shinobi are unable to safely perform Chidori, making it a technique that can only be effectively utilized by members of the Uchiha clan or non-Uchiha individuals possessing a Sharingan, such as Kakashi. Initially, there was also a significant level of strain associated with utilizing Chidori, as Kakashi could only execute it a maximum of four times in a single day during Part I of the Naruto series, owing to the substantial depletion of his chakra. However, this changed during the Fourth Shinobi World War, where he demonstrated the ability to employ it multiple times in a single day without displaying much exhaustion. This highlights the existence of methods to overcome this limitation through consistent training.

Kakashi's Chidori Variants

Kakashi, as the originator of this jutsu, gave a special name to his Chidori after an incident in which he split a bolt of lightning with it. The name he chose was Raikiri or "Lightning Cutter," which commemorates his precise control over the jutsu. Both the Raikiri and Chidori techniques are virtually indistinguishable since they are executed in the same manner and require the Sharingan for safe implementation. As a result, the two names have been used interchangeably throughout the series.

Throughout the series, Kakashi has continually improved upon his original technique to enhance its practicality, extending its usefulness beyond simply defeating enemies or penetrating tough obstacles. Kakashi has occasionally infused his kunai with lightning-charged chakra produced by the technique, increasing its piercing power in both close-quarter combat and long-range throws. He also discovered a defensive application for the jutsu by utilizing it to absorb the impact of potent Lightning Release techniques directed at him.

Additionally, Kakashi has combined his Raikiri with that of a shadow clone to generate an electrical beam connecting them. It took on a much darker hue and clashed evenly with Naruto's Rasengan at the Valley of the End, Sasuke gaining a slight advantage towards the end of their battle. This marked the pinnacle of his Chidori's power in Part I.

During his training under Orochimaru, Sasuke developed a range of derived jutsu that manipulated lightning chakra for short and mid-range attacks. He could infuse his sword with the Sword of Kusanagi: Chidori Katana, imbuing it with lightning chakra for increased cutting prowess. By employing the Lightning Flash technique, he could enhance a fuma shuriken with lightning chakra as well. Sasuke also mastered the Chidori Senbon, unleashing multiple lightning-shaped blades that resembled needles, effectively targeting and incapacitating numerous foes across a wide area.
