Highlights
Shadowheart's sharp wit and casual flirtation make her the most romanced character in Baldur's Gate 3, but she also has a fierce and resolute side.
Shadowheart's lines in the game are both powerful and impactful, highlighting her personal journey while also incorporating clever and witty jokes that reveal her sense of humor. Not only do her memorable lines illustrate her unwavering dedication to Shar, but they also express her deep affection for night orchids and her longing to break free from the shadows and welcome a more optimistic tomorrow.
Shadowheart quickly became the most sought-after character for romance in Baldur's Gate 3, thanks to her quick wit and playful flirtation. However, her dialogue goes beyond mere teasing and showcases her strong and determined personality. Alongside her profound character development, Shadowheart delivers impactful lines that leave a lasting impression and sprinkles in some humorous remarks to show that she is not just a mysterious figure. For those who admire Shadowheart's cleverness, here are some of her standout lines in Baldur's Gate 3.
10 "Let's See What Comfort We Can Offer A Grieving Mother"
Players may be familiar with Shadowheart's third act date where she takes her lover swimming, but the date becomes more eerie if she is still deeply devoted to Shar. Although it stems from a place of love, Shadowheart wants the party to receive Shar's blessing before confronting the Absolute. She brings her lover to a nearby Selune statue and, using a vial of Dame Aylin's blood from her act two murder, she drenches the statue. This action is accompanied by a line that is both impactful and chilling, particularly for those who enjoy a more sinister side of Shadowheart.
9 "Why Must The Dead Three Be So Obvious And Ugly With Their Decor?"
This line showcases a shift in tone, unveiling Shadowheart's playful side while still maintaining a critical stance. If Shadowheart decides to distance herself from Shar's worship, she can engage in this conversation with Gale upon their initial arrival at the Temple of Bhaal. During their exploration, she humorously criticizes the excessively gruesome decorations, contrasting them to Shar's intricate style. This conversation not only highlights Shadowheart's sense of humor but also indicates her progress in letting go of her devotion to Shar.
8 "Everyone Has To Suffer - It's A Fact Of Life"
Shadowheart's usage of this profound line to defend her allegiance to the malevolent goddess Shar, whose followers subscribe to the values of suffering, loss, and darkness, is a regrettable aspect. However, looking past this caveat, the message holds significant meaning and resonates with both Shadowheart's personal growth and the overall storyline of Baldur's Gate 3. The game itself encompasses a great deal of suffering, with Shadowheart bearing a significant portion of it, yet it is integral to the narrative and contributes to the enchantment of the experience.
7 "You Can't Just Stick Your Hand In Every Strange Hole You Come Across"
Shadowheart delivers a witty remark in Shadowheart, which also serves as valuable advice. This line carries a touch of novelty, as it is only uttered by Shadowheart when she is present in the party while players discover a crack in the wall at Moonrise Towers during act two. Upon choosing to explore what lies within the hole, players are greeted by a fleshy tentacle, enabling them to communicate with the Absolute. After concluding the interaction and safely withdrawing their hand, Shadowheart playfully chimes in with this comment, revealing her fondness for innuendos.
6 "You Mean I'd Get To Prove You Wrong And Thrash You? I Love It"
As stated earlier, Shadowheart is known for her fierce demeanor, especially towards people she associates with, and even more so towards those she does not. Lae'zel, the githyanki companion character, often bears the brunt of Shadowheart's biting remarks.
Although most individuals would feel apprehensive when presented with a duel at dawn, Shadowheart's response is effortlessly composed. This remark comes at the expense of Lae'zel, adding a touch of coolness. However, if the player does not intervene, the situation can quickly escalate beyond control.
5 "You Can't Cast A Shadow Without Some Light"
The quote may seem cheesy if it was posted on an Instagram caption, but there is a genuine, touching, and meaningful quality to the way Shadowheart expresses herself. In her quest to rescue her parents, Shadowheart confronts Shar and discovers her true name, Jenevelle. When asked what she would like to be called from now on, Shadowheart decides that the name still resonates with her for the same reasons. Despite its overused nature, Shadowheart's genuine emotion truly brings depth to the line and it is undeniable that the name suits her perfectly.
4 "Try Not To Dream About Tying Me Up"
Shadowheart shows a clear inclination towards flirting with the player character, even from the early stages of their acquaintance. An instance of such behavior occurs during a conversation about illithid tadpoles and the hypothetical actions they would take if they transformed into mindflayers.
The player character suggests that they would hypothetically keep Shadowheart restrained as they seek a cure. This elicits a fond response from her, as she playfully mentions that she would likely choose to eliminate the player character instead. It is important to note that this remark is made in a lighthearted manner. However, as she bids the player goodnight, she teasingly alludes to this scenario.
3 "Do You Know Why I Love Night Orchids?"
It is widely known that Shadowheart holds a deep affection for the night orchid flower. The reasons for this are twofold - firstly, they played a significant role in her upbringing, offering solace and comfort. Secondly, only those who have pursued a romantic relationship with a loyal Shadowheart until the very end are privy to the true meaning behind her attachment to these flowers. During the player's final moments with Shadowheart, she expresses her gratitude for the time spent together, but acknowledges that it must now draw to a close so she can continue serving Shar.
To console the disappointed player characters, Shadowheart shares her profound love for night orchids, explaining that their ephemeral nature is part of their allure. These flowers bloom in hidden corners, captivating those fortunate enough to witness them, before eventually retreating back into the darkness from which they emerged. While this revelation may be devastating, the symbolism of the night orchids remains undeniably beautiful.
2 "Oh Hells, You Didn't Pick That By Hand Did You? They're Deadly Poisonous!"
This cherished moment has endeared Shadowheart fans to her playful side. It serves as a reminder to players of her mischievous nature as a 'trickery' cleric. After Shadowheart shares her fondness for night orchids, players have the option to gift her one of the flowers.
If they do, she initially reacts with horror, warning players that the flowers are highly toxic...before swiftly taking back her statement. She assures players that the flowers are harmless and admits that she was only joking, expressing her gratitude for the gesture. It's heartwarming to witness Shadowheart embracing a lighter side in such a tender moment.
1 "I've Never Been Able To Write My Own Future. I Wouldn't Even Know Where To Begin"
Similar to Shadowheart's personal journey, this line carries a poignant mix of emotions. It captures the sadness stemming from Shar's theft of her life, but also symbolizes the opportunity to create new memories after turning away from Shar.
When encouraged by the player, Shadowheart expresses her desire for a space where animals of various kinds can have warmth, affection, and an abundance of love. She also reveals her wish to cultivate vibrant flowers and be immersed in a world of colors, punctuating her statement with the impactful phrase, "I've had enough of darkness." This heartfelt moment with her is truly moving.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available on PC and PlayStation 5. A version for Xbox Series X/S is currently in development.
