Highlights
Fortnite's success is due in part to its collaborations with pop culture figures, and the recent Jujutsu Kaisen crossover is well-timed with the anime's ongoing popularity.
Fortnite has recently incorporated several anime franchises, including Naruto, Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, and now Jujutsu Kaisen.
The inclusion of Jujutsu Kaisen in Fortnite brings exciting possibilities, such as the introduction of Cursed Spirits and the ability to cast spells. However, it is crucial to maintain balance and ensure that these new elements do not become too overpowering.
Fortnite, which made its debut in 2017, has sparked a significant transformation in the battle royale genre. Even after six years, this free-to-play shooter remains immensely popular with 400 million registered users as of June 2023. The success of Fortnite can be attributed to various factors, but one of the most crucial ones is Epic Games' willingness to collaborate with numerous influential figures from popular culture.
In the most recent announcement, it has been confirmed that there will be a crossover between Jujutsu Kaisen and Fortnite, which is a logical move. Presently, with the highly anticipated season 2 being aired, it is the perfect time for this shonen anime to be introduced into the game. Fortnite often strategically times its major collaborations with key moments in the guest franchise, and given that Jujutsu Kaisen is delving into Gojo's backstory, it presents an ideal opportunity.
Jujutsu Kaisens' Characters Are Perfect For The World of Fortnite
Starting with the introduction of Fortnite as a global sensation, Epic Games has formed partnerships with various franchises to introduce fresh skins and cosmetics. Through these collaborations, different aspects of the battle royale game have been modified to align with the theme of each partnership. An illustration of this can be seen in the inclusion of web-slinging, which was introduced during the Spider-Man crossovers in 2021 and 2023.
Initially, the focus of the battle royale leaned more towards superheroes and live-action content rather than anime. It wasn't until 2021 that Fortnite began incorporating characters from popular anime IPs, starting with Naruto. Subsequently, titles like Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, and My Hero Academia also made their way into the game.
Following leaked information about a crossover between Jujutsu Kaisen and Fortnite, Epic Games has now officially announced that the crossover will take place on August 8 as part of Update 25.30. This highly anticipated event will introduce legendary sorcerers such as Gojo, Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara to the game, each with their own fascinating backstory and unique abilities. Players will have the opportunity to utilize Cursed Tools, don exclusive skins, and likely engage in themed quests.
While the previous Attack on Titan crossover incorporated ODM Gear and Thunder Spears, Jujutsu Kaisen brings its own distinctive elements. Although unconfirmed, there is speculation that Cursed Spirits may appear across the island. It would also be intriguing if players could unleash spells against their adversaries, potentially drawing inspiration from the Force ability showcased in the recent Star Wars Fortnite event.
The Jujutsu Kaisen world can take inspiration from the My Hero Academia Fortnite crossover and Dragon Ball Super crossover in terms of creating innovative and balanced supernatural abilities for the game. However, it is important for Epic Games to avoid introducing overpowered drops like Deku's Smash and Kamehameha, which some players felt were too oppressive.
In the case of Jujutsu Kaisen, the excitement mainly revolves around Satoru Gojo and Yuji Itadori's possessed counterpart. Therefore, Epic Games could benefit from focusing on these two characters and incorporating new mechanics such as cursed techniques into the shooter.
This crossover couldn't have come at a better time for both franchises. If Fortnite keeps collaborating with anime, we might see shows like Demon Slayer and One Piece joining the list. It's unlikely that another anime partnership will happen in Chapter 4 Season 3 of Fortnite as it's expected to end on August 25. Nevertheless, it will be thrilling to see what Epic Games has in store next. Fortnite can be played on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
