Fans of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's Yakuza franchise were recently treated to a glimpse of the combat system in the upcoming Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. The spin-off title aims to fill the gap between the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and previous Yakuza games, with a return to the arcade-like action brawler style that fans know and love. During June's RGG Summit event, the developer showcased a 45-minute presentation that included extra footage of Kiryu utilizing the game's two new combat styles.
In Like a Dragon Gaiden, Kiryu has two new fighting styles, "Yakuza" and "Agent." The "Yakuza" style focuses on Kiryu's natural strength and martial arts, incorporating techniques from his previous stances in Yakuza 0. This style also includes brutal context-sensitive Heat Actions. On the other hand, the "Agent" style is unique and centered on crowd control. Kiryu has access to various tools, such as a wire that shoots out of his wrist to bind enemies or draw them closer to him, and the ability to call upon drones for distraction. He can even cause a massive explosion by lighting a cigarette and tossing it over his shoulder. These new styles give Kiryu a similar playstyle to Takayuki Yagami from the Judgment sub-series.
The upcoming release of Like a Dragon Gaiden was further teased at the RGG Summer Summit, where attendees were introduced to the cast of characters, all of whom are portrayed by celebrities. Joryu's story will feature two members of the Omi Alliance, Shishido Kosei and Tsuruno Yuki, as well as a mysterious woman named Akame. Fans were also given a glimpse of Homare Nishitani, a character from the Yakuza 0 franchise, who will be making an appearance in the game. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the game will take place in the Omi Alliance's hometown of Sotenbori. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is set to launch on November 9, 2023, across various platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
