Unleash the ultimate power on the battlefield with Baldur's Gate 3's diverse party compositions Choose from an array of player characters and companions to create unbeatable combinations that will reign supreme

Creating a party in Baldur's Gate 3 provides gamers with a glimpse into the intense debate among Dungeons and Dragons players regarding the composition of an ideal team. With a limited roster of four members, players must strategically cover a wide range of combat encounters and skill challenges.

While personal preference plays a significant role in the Baldur's Gate 3 experience, the team's functionality becomes crucial, particularly on higher difficulty settings. Although it is technically feasible to assemble a group consisting solely of Fighters or Monks, prepare to face numerous challenging encounters and skill-related obstacles along the way. Players seeking a solution for every situation should exercise caution when building their party.

Best Overall Party Composition

Player - Duergar Dwarf - Oath of the Ancients Paladin - Sage - Persuasion & Insight

Karlach - Berserker Barbarian

Shadowheart - Trickery Domain Cleric

Gale - Evocation Wizard

The speaker for the party must possess the Deception, Intimidate, or Persuasion proficiency, along with a high Charisma attribute and proficiency in Insight. Additionally, it is crucial for characters in this role to have the spells Speak with Animals and Detect Thoughts. None of the companions possess this specific skill set. Although Astarion comes close, he lacks proficiency in Insight. On the other hand, Gale possesses the required skills, but his focus lies more on Intelligence and other attributes rather than Charisma. Hence, it becomes the responsibility of a player character to fulfill this role.

A Paladin is capable of managing encumbrance and fulfilling their role effectively. The Uncovered Mysteries Amulet grants the ability to Detect Thoughts, and Oath of the Ancients Paladins gain Speak with Animals at level three. This not only enhances the party's defensive capabilities but also provides a powerful frontline attacker. Additionally, Paladins offer valuable healing support, which is often necessary for parties to avoid taking extended rests.

In theory, a player could utilize both Lae'zel and Karlach to create a strong frontline, allowing the player character to be a Bard. However, this presents a potential issue as Lae'zel and Karlach have conflicting values. Their opposing preferences may lead to one of them leaving the party. While players have the option to switch party members before making decisions, it is advisable to choose either Lae'zel or Karlach to maintain party cohesion. It is important not to assign Shadowheart as a tank since her Bless spell requires concentration and it is crucial to protect her from taking hits.

The majority of this party is aligned with good intentions. While playing as an evil-aligned party can be enjoyable, there are some disadvantages to consider. Oathbreaker Paladins can serve as effective speakers but they lose the ability to communicate with animals. Additionally, this clashes with the healer's role as Shadowheart is generally a morally upright individual. Gamers have the option to create an evil healer, but this would result in having only one person at the front during challenging battles, which may not be sufficient. Furthermore, this makes it more challenging to fulfill the area damage role since both Wyll and Gale tend to lean towards the more compassionate side (even if Wyll occasionally puts on a facade).

Gale is the ideal addition to this party, not only because of his pleasant nature. With the Barbarian and Paladin handling single targets effectively and Shadowheart keeping the frontline healthy, Gale's Evocation Wizard abilities make him invaluable for dealing with area damage without harming allies. Additionally, as a Wizard, Gale can quickly access and prepare any spell from his vast repertoire, ensuring the party is always equipped with the perfect spell for any situation, even after leaving camp.

Baldur's Gate 3 is currently playable on PC, with the PlayStation 5 version scheduled for release on September 6th, 2023. An Xbox Series X/S version is still under development.
