The Wind element in Honkai: Star Rail is often overshadowed by other elements, as characters from those elements tend to be more valuable in various situations. However, the gameplay in Honkai: Star Rail focuses on team composition and exploiting opponents' weaknesses rather than elemental reactions, unlike Genshin Impact, another successful game from HoYoverse. This means that Wind characters should not be limited to support roles like their Anemo counterparts. As more characters are released, the distinction between Wind characters and other elements may become more apparent.
When it comes to gameplay, the Wind Element in Honkai: Star Rail revolves around the use of the Wind Sheer Damage over Time (DoT) effect. This effect gradually decreases the HP of strong opponents through stackable effects. Currently, players have access to characters like Sampo who excel at applying DoT effects, and there may be more characters like Blade introduced in future updates, each with their own unique abilities and kits. Due to the diverse gameplay and focus on team roles, it is challenging to determine the value of each character in different situations. However, some characters may offer more versatility, allowing them to be effective in a wider range of scenarios.
4 Sampo
Sampo is a mischievous character in terms of the story, leaving players with the impression that there is more to him than meets the eye. However, when it comes to gameplay, Sampo, a 4-star Nihility character, often finds himself overshadowed by other offensive support characters, especially fellow Nihility characters like Pela, Welt, or the more recent addition, Silver Wolf. This is because Sampo's team role differs from theirs.
While other characters provide debuffs that benefit the entire team, Sampo's focus is on applying DoT effects and breaking weaknesses. This might not be perceived as valuable by most players. However, with the right build and when paired with characters that synergize well with Sampo, players can uncover his significant sub-DPS potential. Particularly in the Simulated Universe, when combined with Nihility Path Resonance, Sampo can be a fun character to play and experiment with.
3 Dan Heng
Dan Heng is a valuable character for players to have in their roster, not just for early content but also for endgame challenges. His Hunt path makes him a formidable single-target DPS character, capable of dealing significant damage. This makes him a viable option for players who may not have obtained another DPS character like Blade. In particular, for challenging content like Forgotten Hall, where enemies with Wind weakness are present, properly building Dan Heng can prove to be highly effective.
In addition to his DPS capabilities, Dan Heng also possesses the ability to reduce enemy speed upon landing a Critical Hit with his skill. This benefit extends to the entire party, making him a valuable asset in group battles. Furthermore, this effect enhances his Ultimate attack, allowing Dan Heng to deal even more damage to Slowed targets. This synergy makes him an excellent partner for Welt, whose abilities can further increase the consistency of slowing enemies and create opportunities for Dan Heng to unleash devastating attacks.
2 Blade
Blade, alongside Kafka, is a highly anticipated member of the Stellaron Hunters in Honkai: Star Rail version 1.2. As a Destruction character, Blade has the ability to deal AoE damage and perform follow-up attacks. What sets him apart is his kit, which functions similarly to Hu Tao from Genshin Impact. Blade scales with HP, receiving a damage bonus based on this stat while gradually reducing his own HP. This design makes him a high-risk, high-reward character, especially in challenging content where defensive support characters are essential to his performance. Characters like Luocha can synergize well with Blade, enabling him to maintain high DPS while effectively managing his HP. Although Blade has some self-healing capabilities, players may face difficulties in finding suitable support units for him since he relies on HP rather than ATK. This makes characters like Tingyun less suitable for his playstyle. However, if this concern is not an issue and players enjoy such gameplay, Blade can be an excellent addition to their teams as a Wind main DPS character.
1 Bronya
Bronya is highly sought after in the standard banner due to her unique support abilities, making her one of the most desired 5-star characters. She not only boosts damage and Crit DMG, but also allows a targeted ally to take an additional action within the same turn. This ability greatly accelerates progress in challenging battles, especially in content like Forgotten Hall, where completing battles quickly with fewer turns is crucial for earning more stars and rewards. As a result, Bronya is widely regarded as an exceptional support character and possibly the best in the game.
However, despite her numerous advantages and straightforward build, Bronya does have some limitations. Players need to carefully manage skill points when using Bronya because her Skill only lasts for one turn. This limitation can be mitigated by accessing her signature light cone, but certain team compositions with characters heavily reliant on skill points may struggle with this drawback. Additionally, although Bronya is a Wind character, her Skill and Ultimate primarily target allies rather than dealing damage, limiting the benefits players can derive from her element. While her Basic Skill can provide some benefit through consistent critical hits, its impact is relatively minor in her case.
Honkai: Star Rail is now available on Android, iOS, and PC. A PlayStation version is in development.
