Baldur's Gate 3's release on PC has garnered exceptional praise, thanks to its vast world and immersive gameplay. With over 75 hours of content in just one playthrough, Larian Studios has designed the game to require multiple campaigns in order to fully explore all of its captivating storylines. Character creation plays a significant role in determining the direction and outcomes of the narrative, as dialogue choices and interactions are tailored to each race, such as Half-orcs, half-elves, Gnomes, Dragonborns, and more. While Larian faced limitations in adding races to the RPG, the inclusion of Fantastical Multiverse expands the possibilities for players.
Modders are able to expand Baldur's Gate 3 in exciting ways where Larian faced limitations. Modder DungeonsAndSouls has released the Fantastical Multiverse 1.0 mod, which adds 54 alternative racial options to Baldur's Gate 3. These options consist of 37 races based on official Dungeons and Dragons source material, 5 races from the Grim Hollow setting, 8 homebrew races, and 4 bonus races from Final Fantasy 14 just for fun.
The Fantastical Multiverse mod introduces various races to Baldur's Gate 3, such as the Bugbear, Changeling, Firbolg, and Minotaur. Additionally, it includes revised versions of standard races from Dungeons and Dragons' Unearthed Arcana, including Elf, Tiefling, Dwarf, Gnome, and Dragonborn, some of which come with multiple new subraces. Furthermore, the mod incorporates races from Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse, like the elemental Genasi, planetouched Aasimar, and tribal Goliaths, among others.
The Fantastical Multiverse mod currently includes four races from Final Fantasy 14: Hyur, Elezen, Roegadyn, and Garlean. The modder, DungeonsAndSouls, has plans to add more races from the game in the future. These races have been specially adapted for Baldur's Gate 3 by the modder themself.
It is important to note that although each race in the mod has unique gameplay standards in Baldur's Gate 3, their implementation in the game may not be seamless. The mod does not mention any custom responses or actions from NPCs towards players with modded races. However, if Baldur's Gate 3 players are interested in a more personalized character creation experience, the Fantastical Multiverse mod is definitely worth exploring.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and arrives on PS5 on September 6, followed by an Xbox Series X/S later this year.
