Summary
Love Again, a remake of the German movie SMS für Dich, has found new success on Netflix after a disappointing theatrical run.
Love Again, the rom-com, has secured the No. 8 position on Netflix's global Top 10 chart with an audience of 2.9 million viewers and a total of 5.1 million viewing hours. Despite its lackluster start, the film is now actively competing against more recent Netflix originals and experiencing a surge in popularity on the streaming platform.
The rom-com flop Love Again, released in 2023, has been given a new lease of life on Netflix. Acting as a remake of the 2016 German film SMS für Dich, the plot revolves around the unfolding drama when Mira's (Chopra Jonas) messages intended for her late fiancé are mistakenly sent to journalist Rob (Sam Heughan), who now possesses that phone number. Rob then conspires with his celebrity profile subject, Celine Dion (playing herself), to find a means of meeting Mira. Despite only making $12.7 million from its $9 million production budget after its theatrical release on May 5, Love Again has secured a spot on Netflix's global Top 10 chart for the week of August 28 - September 3. Making its Netflix debut, the movie has claimed the 8th position, with 2.9 million viewers accumulating a total of 5.1 million viewing hours. This places it below new Netflix originals Heart of Stone and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
Is There Hope For the Theatrical Rom-Com?
Love Again is thriving on Netflix, where a dedicated audience with an appetite for romantic comedies exists. The streaming platform has established itself as a prominent source for this genre, consistently releasing a variety of romantic titles like Set It Up, Your Place or Mine, Always Be My Maybe, and the highly popular To All The Boys trilogy. Notably, they have also produced numerous holiday-themed films.
However, the outlook is less optimistic for romantic films in theaters. Love Again experienced disappointing box office results, mirroring the underwhelming performance of other modern romantic titles. An example of this trend is the LGBTQ+ rom-com Bros, which earned only $14.8 million despite having a budget of $22 million. Furthermore, the period-set film Mr. Malcolm's List generated a meager $2 million in worldwide earnings.
Nevertheless, a handful of other romantic comedy films have managed to achieve a certain degree of success. For instance, the film Marry Me, featuring Jennifer Lopez, earned $50.5 million, surpassing its $23 million budget. Additionally, the bold and provocative film No Hard Feelings, starring Jennifer Lawrence, had a respectable performance in theaters this summer, generating $86.9 million from its $45 million budget. Although neither of these films can be considered blockbuster hits, these box office numbers may indicate a gradual shift in the potential success of romantic comedies in traditional cinema after the release of Love Again.
