Clint Eastwood's 2018 film, The Mule, is currently trending on Netflix. Starring Eastwood as Earl Stone, a Korean War veteran who becomes involved in the dangerous world of drug smuggling, the movie showcases his struggle to regain control of his life. Despite directing two other films since then, namely 2019's Richard Jewell and 2021's Cry Macho, The Mule remains Eastwood's most successful venture, having grossed a remarkable $174.8 million at the international box office.
Surprisingly, The Mule has recently made its presence felt on Netflix's Top 10 list of English-language movies for the week. Securing the sixth position on the chart, the film has made its debut with an impressive 5.4 million unique views, spanning over 9.2 million hours. Notably, it stands as the oldest movie to achieve such high rankings, given that the Top 5 is dominated by newer releases like Extraction 2 (featuring Chris Hemsworth) and the original Extraction from 2020, as well as the 2021 animated film, Paw Patrol: The Movie.
Does Clint Eastwood Have Another Hit In Him?
The Mule's inclusion in the Top 10 can largely be attributed to its recent addition to Netflix. However, this alone cannot fully explain its high ranking since the only other non-2023 releases to make the Top 10 were Get Out at No. 9 and 47 Ronin at No. 10. Interestingly, new-to-Netflix films like Unbroken (2014), Dunkirk (2017), and Accepted (2006) do not appear on the chart at all.
This suggests a possible resurgence of interest in Eastwood's work, which was not evident during the underwhelming theatrical release of Cry Macho two years ago due to the pandemic. Despite being 93 years old, the accomplished filmmaker has not ceased directing and there may be another successful film in his future. His upcoming project, Juror #2, is currently in pre-production.
In addition to Eastwood, who plays the leading role, Toni Collette and Nicholas Hoult are also part of the cast of Juror #2. Eastwood's character possesses the ability to sway the outcome of a crucial murder trial. This film differs from Richard Jewell and Cry Macho as Eastwood is once again in the title role, and it will be released during a time when the box office has had more opportunity to recover. Considering the success of The Mule, there is a strong possibility that this new movie could revive Eastwood's commercial prospects once again.
