Baldur's Gate 3's speedrun world record is now just over 10 minutes.
The speedrunner employed a tactic that centered around Gale as the main character, enabling them to skip ahead to the conclusion of Act 2 and intentionally cause themselves to explode.
Mae, the current record holder, currently boasts the quickest time for Baldur's Gate 3, although only time will tell how long this record will remain unbroken.
A player set a remarkable speedrun world record for Baldur's Gate 3, completing the game in just over ten minutes. This impressive feat was accomplished within two weeks of the game's release. The footage of this incredible achievement went viral as Baldur's Gate 3 earned the title of the highest-rated PC game ever, surpassing all expectations. Many players are still in the early stages of the game and have not yet reached Act 1.
Caution! Ahead, there are Act 2 and Gale-related spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3. Larian Studios, the Belgian developer, has always been transparent about the fact that their latest game is their most ambitious to date. They estimated that completing a thorough playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3 would require a minimum of 75 hours, and for completionists, it could take up to 200 hours.
However, it has been discovered that the game can be completed in just a few minutes if players choose Gale as their origin character in Baldur's Gate 3 and are willing to engage in some clever tactics. A speedrunner named Mae, based in Canada, managed to finish Larian's extensive RPG in 10 minutes and 3 seconds, including loading times. They achieved this by skillfully maneuvering through the game's challenges until reaching a location near the end of Act 2, where Gale can choose to sacrifice himself by detonating the Netherese Destruction Orb embedded in his chest, causing a massive explosion beneath the Moonrise Towers.
This specific course of action is currently the only known legitimate way to bypass the final boss battle and the remaining content in Act 3, which hadn't even begun when Mae had Gale sacrifice himself for the greater good. To accomplish this, Mae's strategy involved using Enhance Leap on Gale to greatly increase his jumping distance, quickly recruiting Shadowheart as a companion, and continuously leaping forward until reaching Act 2. They then leveled up for the first time to acquire a significant boost in health and had their only companion, Shadowheart, cast Sanctuary on Gale to protect him from single-target attacks.
After a couple dozen leaps, Gale found himself near the location where he could make his final stand. During this time, Mae leveled up for the last time, acquiring the Misty Step ability. This Conjuration spell allowed them to bypass the two bosses guarding the final section of Act 2, sacrifice Gale, and finish the game. It's worth noting that even the most impatient players who rush through the RPG's main quest typically spend at least 25 hours to complete Baldur's Gate 3.
According to Speedrun.net, Mae currently holds the world record for speedrunning Larian's popular game. However, it remains uncertain how long their record will stand, especially since major online speedrunning communities have only recently started accepting run submissions for Baldur's Gate 3. This delay between the game's release and the acceptance of submissions is a common practice in the speedrunning community, encouraging players to fully enjoy and experiment with new games before attempting to beat them as quickly as possible.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and launches September 6 on PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S port also in development.
