A Weedle belonging to a Pokemon GO player has been guarding the same gym for over six years. Due to the game's mechanics, certain gyms are located in remote areas with low human presence and minimal player activity. Placing Pokemon in these far-off gyms can pose a risk, as it often results in other players rarely retrieving their Pokemon.
When a player's Pokemon successfully defends a gym for a significant period of time, they can earn a maximum of 50 coins. However, these coins are only awarded when the Pokemon is defeated and returned to the player's team. This means that even if a Pokemon protects a gym for several years, the player will only receive 50 coins for their efforts. Moreover, if that Pokemon returns on a day when the player has already earned their 50-coin limit, they will essentially receive nothing except progress towards the Gym Leader medal, which rewards players for successful gym defenses in Pokemon GO.
Despite this, certain Pokemon GO players still choose to place their Pokemon in gyms that receive minimal or no activity, resulting in their Pokemon being effectively trapped there indefinitely. One such case involves Reddit user Graulithe, whose Weedle has successfully defended a gym for over 2,194 days and counting. Graulithe revealed that the gym is located in a remote area with poor cellular reception, making it extremely challenging for anyone to dislodge the Weedle even if they were aware of its presence. Additionally, Graulithe disclosed that the gym belongs to the Valor team, and there are several other Pokemon that have been safeguarding it for an extended period. Despite the curiosity of some commenters regarding the empty heart of the Weedle, indicating its vulnerability, Graulithe clarified that they occasionally provide berries to their Weedle to replenish its heart and make it more resistant to attacks from other players. However, the total number of berries fed to the Weedle during its time defending the gym remains at 1,200.
In Pokemon GO, this Weedle is not the sole Pokemon that has been guarding a gym for a substantial duration. Recently, a different player shared their Dragonite which has effectively protected a gym for more than a year. Meanwhile, it raises the question of whether there are any Pokemon in existence that have defended a gym in Pokemon GO for a longer period than this Weedle has. Pokemon GO is currently available on iOS and Android mobile devices.
