Unaware Pokemon GO Player Accidentally Owned Ultra Rare Pokemon for Over a Year

Unbeknownst to a Pokemon GO player, their girlfriend possesses an extraordinarily rare creature in the game, leading to a delightful surprise and a thrilling quest to uncover the hidden gem within their collection

Highlights

One Pokemon GO player's girlfriend unknowingly had a perfect U-shaped Unown, one of the rarest creatures, for almost two years.

Unown, a Pokemon of rarity in the game, does not hold the status of being legendary or mythical. Its introduction into the game occurred in early 2017 and has since witnessed the gradual unveiling of additional forms.

Although Unown possesses limited competitive viability, capturing a perfect specimen is regarded as a noteworthy accomplishment. Furthermore, players who manage to complete the Unown Alphabet are rewarded with a distinctive platinum medal.

One Pokemon GO player was surprised to discover that their girlfriend had been in possession of a perfect Unown, a highly elusive creature in the game, for nearly two years without realizing it. They took to social media to share this remarkable story, joining the ever-growing collection of incredible Pokemon GO accounts.

Although Unown does not fall under the category of legendary or mythical Pokemon, this creature from the second generation remains exceedingly rare in Pokemon GO. Niantic initially introduced Unown to the game in early 2017 as part of a major update that included various other Pokemon from the Johto region. Over time, the developer gradually introduced additional forms of Unown in Pokemon GO until the beloved mobile game had a complete Alphabet's worth of these unique creatures.

Unown remains incredibly difficult to find, so much so that many experienced Pokemon GO players still don't have it in their collection. Surprisingly, not all fans of the game recognize the significance of catching one of these pocket monsters. This was evident in a recent discovery made by Reddit user BunnyGoHops, who found out that their girlfriend had unknowingly possessed a U-shaped Unown with perfect IVs since February 2022.

It's important to note that this particular Unown was not obtained through accessories like the Poke Ball Plus, which allow players to catch creatures without actively encountering them. Instead, BunnyGoHops realized that their girlfriend had obtained the perfect Unown from a raid but had completely forgotten about it. Unown U had been featured in various Pokemon GO raids, including the original Galar event raid introduced by Niantic in August 2021.

Most players who have completed those raids probably have one or two Unown U in their collection. However, the number of players who have caught a perfect example of this species is much smaller. To put it in perspective, the chance of catching a creature with perfect IVs is 1 in 4,096 or 0.0244%.

While owning a perfect Unown in Pokemon GO may not have much practical value, it is highly desired for bragging rights. This is mainly because Unown is not considered to be a competitively viable Pokemon due to its limited move set and unimpressive base stats. Although IVs may not matter much in this case, Pokemon GO players still strive to complete their Unown Alphabets in order to earn a unique platinum medal for this achievement.

Pokemon GO is available now on mobile devices.
