The innovative Star Wars Outlaws, an open world adventure, has recently drawn comparisons to the renowned Assassin's Creed franchise. This engaging game, set across various planets, was first unveiled at Xbox's Games Showcase and featured a captivating 10-minute gameplay walkthrough during the subsequent Ubisoft Forward event.
Star Wars Outlaws centers around the captivating narrative of Kay Vess, a cunning rogue navigating her way through the galaxy, while simultaneously encountering some of the most infamous crime families within the Star Wars universe. The heart of the gameplay lies in the exhilarating third-person blaster combat, complemented by the presence of Kay's loyal and resourceful companion, Nix, who can provide valuable assistance by either distracting or attacking enemies. Furthermore, the game promises thrilling ship combat, as showcased in the gameplay trailer, seamlessly transitioning players from planetary surfaces to expansive space environments.
With so much happening in Star Wars Outlaws, like a Grand Theft Auto-inspired wanted system and exhilarating speeder bike chases, fans are eager to know more about the shape, structure, and size of the game's open world. IGN pointed out an interview in Edge Magazine with Julian Gerighty, the creative director of Outlaws, who revealed that Kay Vess' journey will not span entire procedurally generated planets. Instead, each planet will feature its own expansive open areas for exploration. Gerighty compared the size of these areas to two regions or "zones" in Assassin's Creed Odyssey's vast world of Ancient Greece, which consists of a total of seven regions.
"It's a simplified comparison, but one planet in Star Wars Outlaws could potentially be equivalent to two or three zones in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. However, we won't be taking the same approach as 'the whole of England recreated' in Valhalla. Our creative director, Julian Gerighty, acknowledges the criticism of Valhalla's expansive open world and assures fans that the open areas in Outlaws won't be nearly as vast. While the number of planets in Outlaws is currently unknown, it's possible that the combined regions of the game could be even larger than those in Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Valhalla."
Since Star Wars Outlaws was unveiled, it has been compared to Bethesda's highly anticipated game, Starfield, which boasts a massive 1,000-planet universe. While Starfield relies on procedural generation to achieve this staggering scale, it appears that Gerighty, the developer of Outlaws, is suggesting that their game's open world structure does not aim to create entire planets, systems, or galaxies in the same way, thus eliminating the need for procedural generation. Fans will have to wait until 2024 for more information on this groundbreaking Star Wars game.
Star Wars Outlaws is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2024.
