Troye Sivan was left speechless by Timothée Chalamet's portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live. In a TikTok video shared on Sunday, November 12, Sivan, 28, described it as a strange and surreal dream where Chalamet was impersonating him and even dressed in his clothes.
Chalamet, aged 27, hosted the Saturday Night Live episode on November 11th. In one skit titled "Troye Sivan Sleep Demon," Sarah Sherman portrayed a character complaining about her sleep paralysis to her doctor played by Bowen Yang. Chalamet, dressed as Troye Sivan in a white tank top and pajama pants, then emerged as her "sleep demon."
"I'm not just any gay guy, my friend. It's me, Troye Sivan. Let's get started," Chalamet said in character, leading to a dance routine that concludes with the Dune star revealing his red underwear by pulling down his pants.
“What are you? Are you some kind of demon?” questioned Sherman, a 30-year-old man. In response, Chalamet jokingly replied, “I portray an Australian YouTube sensation-turned-indie-pop-star and model-turned-HBO-actor, Troye Sivan, being portrayed by an American actor who struggles with the Australian accent. Farewell, diva.”
Yang's doctor character pointed out the increasing visibility of Sivan, stating that he is gradually infiltrating the mainstream.
During the skit, Chalamet presented another dance routine and Yang promptly joined him. In due course, Boygenius, the band consisting of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, made their entrance while the Sivan sleep demons multiplied. The parody concluded with Boygenius dancing alongside Yang, 33, and Chalamet.
"WHY IS LIFE SO WEIRDDDDD RN LMAO IM DEAD," Sivan wrote as the caption for an Instagram post on Sunday. Additionally, the singer replaced his Instagram profile picture with a snapshot of Chalamet from the skit.
Although the SNL sketch was driven by absurdity, its portrayal of Sivan was based on reality. The talented Australian singer initially gained recognition through his YouTube channel and made appearances on several Australian TV programs before achieving fame in the United States. Sivan's debut album, Blue Neighbourhood, was released in 2015.
Since then, he has ventured into various acting projects, including the recent role of Xander in HBO's short-lived series, The Idol.
"I was extremely terrified that I would completely lose control if it didn't receive a positive response," Sivan confessed to British GQ in July when discussing the series. "These individuals are genuinely important to me; they are individuals I have collaborated with for a year. Therefore, I anticipated a highly rigorous evaluation, regardless of whether it was favorable or unfavorable. I was completely clueless as to which direction it would go."
Although The Idol faced its fair share of negative feedback, Sivan remained unaware of the public criticism that followed the debut.
"I didn't read anything at all, yet I had the most incredible weekend," he expressed. "As an actor on this particular show, I gave it my all and achieved the utmost satisfaction. At this moment, I just want to relish in the outcome. Whatever opinions people hold about it, I'm perfectly fine with. After all, it's just a television show - it's natural for individuals to either detest or adore it. My indifference remains untouched."
