Mark Hamill, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, has never had the opportunity to host Saturday Night Live. Despite his consistent work in the entertainment industry, including his voice acting in various animated projects, he has never been approached by SNL creator Lorne Michaels for a hosting gig. In a recent interview with Esquire, Hamill shared his theory on why he has yet to be asked to host the popular sketch comedy show. While he appears content with being a fan of the show, he speculates on the reasons for his absence from the SNL host roster.
When it comes to SNL, it's not as simple as having your agent book you for the show. Instead, they handpick the hosts themselves. I was lucky enough to host Fridays, which was ABC's version of SNL. Although I can't be certain, I have a suspicion that this may have played a role in not being viewed favorably by Lorne Michaels."
Other Actors Who Have Never Hosted SNL
If I were asked to do it, I would accept the challenge. However, I am content with being in the audience and not having the pressure of being on live television.
Despite his history of comedic performances, it's surprising that Hamill has never hosted SNL. However, he's not the only star who has yet to fill the coveted role. Fisher, who famously portrayed Princess Leia, hosted the show back in 1978. On the other hand, Ford, another Star Wars cast member, has yet to make an appearance. This may not come as a shock, considering his public persona.
Many other famous actors from Hamill's era have also not yet had the opportunity to host SNL, including Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bob Odenkirk, Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Wahlberg, Julia Roberts, Chris Evans, and Tom Cruise. While it's unclear if Hamill will ever get the chance to host, he remains active in the entertainment industry and has a new comedy film, The Machine, coming out. Regardless of whether he hosts or not, Hamill seems content to enjoy watching the show from the sidelines.
