D.J. Hayden, a former NFL star, passed away at the age of 33.
On Saturday, November 11, Hayden tragically lost his life in a two-vehicle accident in Houston, Texas. The devastating crash claimed the lives of six individuals, comprising five men and one woman.
A Chrysler 300 reportedly accelerated at a high speed, disregarded a red light, and crashed into an Acura SUV, according to Houston Police Assistant Chief Megan Howard's media briefing posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.
Tragically, four individuals lost their lives at the scene, including the Chrysler driver and a homeless man who was tragically hit on the sidewalk. Four additional individuals were transported to a nearby hospital, and sadly, two of them have since been declared deceased.
The University of Houston community is deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of former Football student-athletes D.J. Hayden, Zachary McMillian, and Ralph Oragwu in a car accident. We also send our thoughts and prayers to Jeffrey Lewis, who was injured in the incident.

In 2012, Hayden suffered a life-threatening heart injury during a practice session at the University of Houston. Despite this setback, he was chosen as a first-round NFL Draft pick the following year, joining the Oakland Raiders (now based in Las Vegas). Throughout his career, he also played for the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Washington Commanders, retiring from the NFL after the 2021 season.
The Raiders Family is grieving the tragic loss of former cornerback D.J. Hayden. In a statement released on Saturday, the Raiders expressed their sorrow. D.J. Hayden, who was drafted in the first round from the University of Houston in 2013, played nine years in the NFL, including his initial four years with the Silver and Black, despite overcoming a heart injury he suffered during a college practice.
