The Miami Dolphins showcased their offensive brilliance on Sunday, dominating the Denver Broncos with a resounding 70-20 victory in their first home game of the season. Their remarkable performance notched them the second highest score in NFL history for a regular season game. The current record stands at 73 points, set by the Chicago Bears during the 1940 NFL Championship, while the regular season record of 72 points was achieved by Washington in 1966.
Late in the final quarter, the Dolphins were presented with an opportunity to surpass the NFL regular season record and equal the Bears' previous achievement. However, they chose to kneel instead of attempting a field goal from the Broncos' 28-yard line.

"We didn't come here to chase points or set records. That doesn't affect the overall outcome of the season," stated Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. "In those situations, you usually concede and kneel down without hesitation. While it was cool to have the opportunity to achieve a record, I felt that the message it would send was not in line with my perspective." According to ESPN Stats & Info, Miami's victory marks only the fourth instance in NFL history where a team has scored a minimum of 70 points, including playoffs.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa displayed a flawless performance in the initial half, connecting on all 16 of his passes for 206 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, propelling the team to a commanding 35-13 lead.

Tagovailoa became the first quarterback since 1991 to achieve a remarkable feat of completing 15 or more passes without any inaccuracies and surpassing 200 yards by halftime. In the meantime, Dolphins' running backs Raheem Mostert and DeVon Achane showcased exceptional performance by collectively scoring a total of eight touchdowns, setting a new franchise record and surpassing the previous one by an impressive margin of 15 points.
Achane recorded an impressive 203 rushing yards on 18 carries, whereas Mostert accumulated a total of 142 yards.
Tagovailoa and the majority of the team's key players were substituted before the beginning of the fourth quarter. He concluded the game with four touchdown passes, completing 23 out of 26 passes.
Miamis' 726 total yards establish a new franchise record for the highest number of yards in a single game.
During the NFL Championship Game in December 1940, the Bears demolished Washington with a score of 73-0. Later, in November 1966, Washington defeated the New York Giants with a final score of 72-41 towards the end of the regular season.
The only other team to score 70 points in an NFL game was the Los Angeles Rams in 1950 against the Baltimore Colts.
