At the May 24 PlayStation Showcase, several indie titles in development for the platform were revealed, including the debut game from new developer Dreamlit inc. Titled Towers of Aghasba, the open-world fantasy game requires players to balance survival elements such as building villages and restoring ecosystems with a narrative-driven adventure. The game's trailer teases a mix of farming and life-sim elements from Stardew Valley combined with an open-world adventure reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Despite being a debut game from a new studio, Towers of Aghasba appears incredibly ambitious, featuring city and town building as well as manipulation of local flora and fauna. The protagonist was even seen using a paraglider similar to the one used by Link in Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The game wears its genre influences proudly and is a refreshing sight to see from a new studio's first release.
Towers of Aghasba's Blend of Genres Could be an Addictive Combo
As the popularity of survival games has skyrocketed and life-sims like Stardew Valley have become massive successes, Towers of Aghasba sets itself apart as one of the first titles to blend action-adventure gameplay with elements of survival and city-building. Some argue that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also successfully incorporates survival elements and aspects of immersive sims. Dreamlit's ambitious debut title has all the necessary components to hook players and keep them engaged, as demonstrated by the seemingly endless gameplay loops found in both Stardew Valley and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. In fact, despite being released less than a month ago, many players have already logged over 100 hours in their quest to explore every corner of the open-world sandbox offered by Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Crafting a game that combines the best features of both Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Stardew Valley seems like a recipe for success. Players have collectively spent an immense amount of time in the worlds of these two beloved titles, with some even surpassing the 50,000-hour mark in Stardew Valley alone. Dreamlit has the opportunity to incorporate the charm and sense of discovery from both games in order to deliver a truly compelling experience. However, the studio behind Towers of Aghasba has set a perilous bar if they truly aim to create a "game of a generation" that draws from such esteemed inspirations.
The gaming industry lacks titles that blend a narrative-driven action-adventure plot with moments of city building and crafting. Enix's ActRaiser was among the first games to successfully merge these genres, and it went on to influence the underrated Ever Oasis from the 3DS library. Towers of Aghasba aims to capture the essence of both games while surpassing their templates with additional features, resulting in a world that players will find captivating. Although the game isn't due to release until 2024, its target audience will likely have completed one playthrough of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (or spent another 100 hours in Stardew Valley) before its launch.
Towers of Aghasba will launch for PC and PS5 in 2024.
