Three years after being named the “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2017, Shelton expressed his surprise and disbelief at the recognition. During an interview on the Gayle King Grammy Special in January 2020, he recalled the moment his manager informed him of the title, saying, “They want to put you as the Sexiest Man Alive,” to which he responded, “Wh— what?!” Despite facing criticism and backlash, Shelton admitted that he couldn't disagree with the magazine's choice, acknowledging that he understood the reasoning behind it.
Shelton joked: “Come on, let’s face it — they screwed up.”

Despite being crowned the "Sexiest Man Alive" in 2017, Shelton himself confessed to not understanding what the hype was all about, three years down the road.
"I recall dialing my manager who informed me, 'They are proposing you as the Sexiest Man Alive,' and I was taken aback," he expressed during the Gayle King Grammy Special in January 2020. "Upon the release of that magazine, naturally there were negative reactions and criticism. However, I distinctly remember thinking, 'They're onto something.' I wholeheartedly agree with everything I was hearing."
Shelton humorously remarked, "Well, let's be honest - they made a mistake."
