As the musicians commemorated their silver wedding anniversary, McGraw reflected on his unorthodox endeavor to win Hill's heart, which initially proved fruitless.

"After dating for some time, I persistently proposed to her numerous times, but she consistently declined," he revealed on social media in October 2021. "She expressed, 'I refuse to enter a relationship with another country singer; it simply won't succeed.'"

The singer of "Humble and Kind" was determined not to give up easily. During an outdoor concert, he took matters into his own hands.

"They had set up these trailer houses. I was getting ready to go on stage, and I had a case with a large mirror in it. She was standing there, and we were talking, and I said, 'Let's get married,'" he remembered. "She responded, 'You're proposing to me at a country music festival in a trailer house.' And I replied, 'Well, it's rather fitting if you think about it.' She asked, 'Are you serious?' And I answered, 'Yes, I'm serious.'"

During the musicians' 25th wedding anniversary celebration, McGraw reflected on his unorthodox endeavor to win Hill's heart, which initially didn't yield success.

"We had been dating for a considerable duration. I made numerous proposals of marriage, but she consistently turned me down," he shared on social media in October 2021. "She expressed, 'I refuse to embark on a relationship with another country singer; it simply won't be successful.'"

The singer of "Humble and Kind" was determined not to give up easily. During an outdoor concert, he took matters into his own hands.
