This article contains spoilers for Final Fantasy 16. After years of anticipation, Final Fantasy 16 is now available to players. Developed by Square Enix's Creative Business Unit 3, known for their work on the acclaimed Heavensward expansion for Final Fantasy 14, the game has lived up to expectations. With improved action combat mechanics and breathtaking boss battles, Final Fantasy 16 is proving to be another success for the beloved RPG series.
But the story doesn't end there. A significant free update has just been released, and producer Naoki Yoshida revealed at Pax West 2023 that a PC version and two paid DLC episodes are in the works. These DLC episodes were initiated in response to players' feedback, expressing their desire to further explore the world of Valisthea and its inhabitants. This hints at the potential content that the DLC might offer. Fans have already been speculating and making requests for Final Fantasy 16 DLC, and some of these suggestions seem highly likely to be realized.
Find Leviathan’s Missing Dominant
Playing as Party Members
The enigmatic Leviathan the Lost, an anomaly in Valisthea's Eikon-dominated realm, is a familiar presence to those who have ventured deep into Final Fantasy 16. Once the mighty Eikon of Water, its existence now barely lingers in scarce historical records. An intriguing theory suggests that the Leviathan Dominant, believed to be the enigmatic NPC Kihel, might have already made subtle appearances, further fueling fans' curiosity. Regardless of the truth behind its identity, players eagerly await Leviathan's arrival as a DLC character, eagerly anticipating its awe-inspiring abilities and unique fighting style for none other than Clive.
Although Final Fantasy 16 addressed concerns about the absence of a traditional RPG party, there is still room for improvement in the development of the existing characters. Both the supporting cast at Cid's Hideaway and the enemy Dominants could benefit from more screen time and further story arcs. It would be advisable for the DLC to shift the focus away from Clive and instead feature other significant characters like Jill, Cid, and Joshua. Including short scenarios where players can control these companions, similar to the DLC in Final Fantasy 15, would greatly enhance the memorability of Final Fantasy 16.
Explore More of Valisthea
Add Bonus Content
Despite the game's focus on travel and politics, there are still numerous unexplored areas in Valisthea. The Iron Kingdom, the Crystalline Dominion, and the Free Cities of Kanver, which are all major nations, only have one main quest each and are completely absent from FF16's vast open fields. Even the Blight-covered northlands, where Jill comes from, receive minimal attention. It would be intriguing to have a DLC where players can reclaim Jill's birthplace and engage in battles involving restricted Eikon abilities.
In addition to the major paid updates, FF16's DLC has the potential to divide some of its less significant content between itself and future free updates. The DLC could feature additional hunts, maps, Chronolith Trials, and side quests, while improvements that enhance the overall gameplay experience, such as the inclusion of side quest or hunt boards in the pause menu, more fast travel points, and even instant access to Final Fantasy mode, would ideally be included in patches. One noteworthy addition that could greatly enhance the FF16 DLC is the introduction of a second primary weapon for Clive, complete with its own unique Eikon loadout. Although this feature could arrive quite late into Final Fantasy 16's lifespan, it, along with challenging new content in the DLC, would provide dedicated fans with compelling reasons to continue their adventures in the game.
Final Fantasy 16 is available now on PS5 and is coming soon for PC.
