Tim McGraw credits his sobriety journey to Faith Hill, stating that he wouldn't be able to stay strong without her support in every aspect of his life.
McGraw acknowledged the difficulties he encountered once he acknowledged his alcoholism.
"It's not a straightforward journey. There are setbacks and moments of progress," he expressed. "This will likely be an ongoing process for the remainder of my life, something that requires constant dedication and effort. And I believe my song 'Hey Whiskey' assists me in that aspect. It provided me with great emotional release in many ways."
McGraw, who exchanged vows with Hill, 55, in 1996, has previously opened up about hitting rock bottom with his drinking before turning to his wife for help.
McGraw, who has three daughters with Hill, recalled a defining moment when he found himself going to the liquor cabinet early in the morning and realizing he had to wake the kids up. In 2021, he opened up to Esquire about this experience, admitting his fear and seeking help. Reflecting on that moment, McGraw expressed his gratitude for his wife's support and how her embrace transformed his life.
McGraw also shared how Hill completely transformed his perspective on love. He admitted, "My wife always tells me that I fear nothing. And yet, there is one thing that terrifies me, and that is looking at her. I had never experienced love in such a profound way before. I questioned if it was simply an emotion, a way of life, or even a figment of my imagination. But now, I know that love encompasses all of those things."
He went on to describe love in a more complex manner, stating, "Love involves moments of anger and silence. It involves confronting each other face-to-face and acknowledging when I am wrong. Love encompasses every aspect of life and is not a linear experience. Despite the common belief that couples should not argue in front of their children, we, like many others, cannot help but engage in disagreements while our kids are present. It's just a part of being in a committed relationship."
During his interview on Tuesday, McGraw shared how music played a significant role in connecting him and Hill.
"When we performed 'It's Your Love' together," he explained, discussing their duet from the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1997, "it became our song. We were in the early stages of our relationship, and that song brought us together in a way that nothing else could. I vividly remember filming the video here in Los Angeles while Faith was pregnant with Gracie. It was an incredibly special time, marking the beginning of a long-lasting bond. Looking back, that experience not only transformed my music career, but also had a profound impact on my life."
