Baldur's Gate 3: Unveiling the Astonishing Lore of Balduran's Giantslayer - A Remarkable Legendary Weapon that Transcends Mere Combat Utility

Baldur's Gate 3, like any exceptional CRPG, offers a wide range of incredible loot for every conceivable race and class combination. One such notable item is the Everburn Blade, which gained early recognition as players can acquire it by defeating a formidable boss in the opening sequence. This weapon proves invaluable throughout the early stages of the game and beyond. Additionally, there are legendary weapons available, including a remarkable 2H Sword in Act 3 that all two-handed melee characters should strive to obtain.

Balduran's Giantslayer stands out as an exceptional 2H Sword (see stats below), surpassing numerous legendary melee weapons found within BG3. Unlike some "legendary" weapons that derive their status solely from combat abilities or have insignificant lore, Balduran's Giantslayer embodies the true essence of a legendary weapon. Not only does it possess impressive stats, but it also integrates deeply significant lore that intertwines with the main story, the Guardian of BG3, and more.

WARNING: BG3 SPOILERS AHEAD

BG3: Balduran's Giantslayer Lore is Mind-Blowing

There are two possible ways for BG3 players to come across Balduran's Giantslayer. They can either stumble upon it through careful exploration or follow the guidance of Wyll's father. Upon speaking to him, he will inform the players about the need to find the protector of Baldur's Gate, a powerful dragon known as Ansur, in order to defeat the Netherbrain threat. To accomplish this, players must solve intricate puzzles in the Wyrmway. As a result of their efforts, they will come across the remains of Baldur's Gate's esteemed guardian. While exploring the area, players may also discover Balduran's Helm, which complements Balduran's Giantslayer perfectly. However, interacting with the deceased dragon triggers a challenging boss fight. Upon successfully defeating the boss, players are rewarded with the opportunity to loot the dragon and obtain this coveted weapon.

Ansur reveals crucial information that expands upon the story developments in BG3 up to this point. By now, players will have discovered that their BG3 Guardian is a Mind Flayer called The Emperor, who is using the Astral Prism prisoner, Orpheus, to protect the player. They will also know that The Emperor was once a free-willed adventurer from Baldur's Gate. Before the Mind Flayer revelation, players had various reasons to either trust or distrust The Emperor in the present day. However, Ansur introduces a significant twist to this.

It is revealed that The Emperor is not just connected to Baldur's Gate; he is the very foundation of the city. The Emperor, formerly known as Balduran, was once a human who constructed Baldur's Gate. In theory, this revelation would give players more justification to trust The Emperor. However, a surprising turn of events quickly unfolds: The Emperor killed Ansur. After escaping the control of the Elder Brain for the first time, the mind flayer returned to Baldur's Gate and took on the persona of The Emperor in the underground. He sought out his long-time ally, Ansur. Regrettably, Ansur was unable to accept or comprehend Balduran's new form, constantly seeking a cure for his old friend. Meanwhile, Balduran, now The Emperor, embraced his newfound identity and evolution. When Ansur attempted a "Mercy Killing" on Balduran, the Mind Flayer mercilessly ended Ansur's life instead. This pivotal act was committed using the very same sword that players can now wield, as described in the weapon's description.

Wielded by Balduran, the founder of Baldur's Gate and companion to its guardian dragon, a magnificent and radiant wyrm named Ansur. However, even the strongest bonds can be effortlessly severed, just like you or I might loosen the laces of our shoes. It was in a time of deceit and hardship, though, that Balduran brought an end to Ansur's life, wielding this very sword.

The Unstoppable Might of Baldur's Gate 3: Unleashing the True Power of Balduran's Giantslayer

Balduran's Giantslayer is not only deserving of its legendary status, but it also offers even more than meets the eye. The issue of trust is significant. Balduran suggests that Ansur attempted to kill him while he slept, and he regrettably fought back. However, the Mind Flayer's manipulative nature raises further inquiries, such as the presence of Ansur's body in a specially dedicated worship room. While it is plausible that the Emperor slept there, it is important to note that the Emperor had his own exclusive space within the city. Consequently, BG3's portrayal of The Emperor becomes more sympathetic if players believe that his closest friend betrayed him. The truth is unknown, but this weapon encapsulates the lore that surrounds it.

Nevertheless, this lore remains relevant, both literally within The Emperor and metaphorically within the player, influenced by the choices made in BG3. In essence, if players wield this weapon and embrace the gradual transformation into an Illithid, they are mirroring Balduran's own path. Alternatively, they have the option to forge their own destiny. Even at a surface level, Balduran's Giantslayer serves as a powerful storytelling tool, intertwining with the game's lore, solidifying its rightful place as a legendary weapon. Delving deeper into its narrative only enhances this.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC, releases for PS5 on September 6, and will drop on Xbox Series X/S before the end of the year.
