NetherRealm Studios made an attempt to include John Wick in the first Mortal Kombat game, but unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful. According to Ed Boon, the creative director at NetherRealm, John Wick's unique skill set would have made him a great fit for the Mortal Kombat series. However, despite their attempts, they were unable to make it happen.

In 2021, Keanu Reeves, known for his roles as John Wick and Neo in The Matrix, expressed that both characters do not fit in Mortal Kombat.

Reeves stated, "If it was my decision? No. Mortal Kombat is incredible in various aspects, but I believe that Neo and John Wick should stick to their respective storylines. Mortal Kombat has its own unique direction."

Lionsgate, the owner of the John Wick series, has its own intentions for expanding the John Wick video game universe. The reason for John Wick's absence in Mortal Kombat 1 remains undisclosed, although it likely relates to licensing rights and associated costs. Nevertheless, John Wick previously made a cameo as a guest character in Fortnite in 2019.

During the interview, Boon mentioned that he had considered the possibility of having well-known actors portray the characters in Mortal Kombat 1. He specifically mentioned Reeves as a potential candidate for the role of Kenshi. However, Boon acknowledged that this idea was merely a "pipe dream."

Boon highlighted that many actors are unaware of the complexity involved in video games. He emphasized that signing up for such projects entails more than just a quick recording session lasting an hour. It requires the commitment and dedication typically associated with traditional acting roles.

Mortal Kombat 1 features Megan Fox as Nitara, however, some fans are dissatisfied with her delivery of voice lines.
